SHSP hosts 2nd Annual Innovation and Scholarship Day

SHSP InnovationThe School of Health Sciences and Practice hosted the 2nd Annual Innovation and Scholarship Day on May 7. Students, faculty and staff members shared their innovative health projects and scholarly activities in research, teaching, and the integration and application of research and theory to professional service and practice. The goals of the event are to stimulate networking among the students and faculty, celebrate commitment to scientific discovery, and express appreciation to university and community collaborators. We know NYMC students are talented and creative! We’d like to share that with others and are looking for submissions of original student artwork or photography reflective of life at NYMC. One submission will be published in Chironian, the university magazine.

Stuart A. Newman, Ph.D.


Stuart A. Newman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, presented the closing plenary talk, “Ancient Genes, Mesoscale Physics, and the Origins of Animal Development,” at an international symposium on Visualisation and Manipulation of Signals and Forces in Developing Tissues, in Santiago, Chile, in May. He also delivered a public lecture, “How the Physics of Tissues Created Animal Form,” at the National Congress Building of Santiago, the former site of the Chilean legislature.

Denise Tahara, M.B.A., M.Phil., Ph.D.



Denise Tahara, M.B.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., associate professor of public health practice, health policy and management and director of M.P.H. studies in health policy and management, was elected a director at large of the New York State Public Health Association for the 2014 – 2017 term.


Joseph Wu, Ph.D.


Joseph M. Wu, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and M.S. program director, was an invited speaker at the Career Development Workshop organized by the American Society of Microbiology 2014 Meeting, held May 17-20 in Boston. He participated in the workshop, “Getting started as a microbiologist at a Primarily Undergraduate Institution” and presented in “Mentoring Undergraduates: Knowing them and Knowing Yourself,” at a plenary session.
