Med Students Observe Movember for a Good Cause
The Oncology Interest Group led the School of Medicine (SOM) celebration of No Shave November, or Movember, to raise money for the Movember Foundation to increase awareness of men's health issues including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
The contestants, from left, Jesse Honig, SOM Class of 2021, Trevor Plumer, SOM Class of 2022, Shloimy Gold, SOM Class of 2022, Michael Frohlinger, SOM Class of 2022, and Charles White, SOM Class of 2022, let their facial hair grow throughout the month of November, raising donations through sponsors. The two finalists who raised the most money were then judged by a panel of faculty judges who evaluated them based on criteria such as beard fullness and creativity.
The panel of judges comprised of Mary M. Petzke, Ph.D., assistant dean for medical student research and assistant professor of microbiology and immunology, Jan Geliebter, Ph.D., professor of microbiology and immunology, resident research coordinator in the Department of Otolaryngology and course director of medical microbiology, Matthew A. Pravetz, O.F.M., Ph.D., assistant dean for basic sciences and professor of cell biology and anatomy, and Libor Velíšek, M.D., Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, pediatrics, and neurology and director of the Accelerated Master’s and M.D./Ph.D. programs, declared Jess Honig, the winner. The event raised more than $460.
