With the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) re-accreditation visit to New York Medical College (NYMC) scheduled for spring 2021, work is underway to ensure we meet the standards set forth by Middle States. MSCHE is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as the entity to conduct accreditation activities for institutions of higher education in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Regional accreditation through MSCHE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and is required for students to be eligible to receive federal financial aid. Thus, the operation of the College and all of its schools and programs are dependent on MSCHE accreditation. The re-accreditation process, every eight years, is designed to promote self-reflection and evaluation so that the College can assess how well we have been advancing our mission and goals and identify opportunities for improvement.
The MSCHE self-study is a College-wide evidenced-based process and we invite all to participate. In fact, we need the participation of all stakeholders. There will be opportunities to attend town halls and meetings throughout the year and we encourage you to join in for these discussions. There are also working groups centered around each of the seven MSCHE Standards and we request any student interested in participating in a working group to contact Dana G. Mordue, Ph.D., vice chancellor of MSCHE accreditation and associate professor of microbiology and immunology, or any member of the NYMC MSCHE steering committee.
