Admissions for International Applicants

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBMS) and School of Health Sciences & Practice (SHSP) programs accept international students. Due to funding limitations and budgetary restraints for international travel, the GSBMS will only accept applications to the PhD program from international students if they are currently undergraduate or graduate students in the U.S. with an F1 visa. To apply to the School of Medicine you must be a US citizen, hold an unconditional permanent resident card, have DACA status or Canadian citizenship.

Below you’ll find the additional information for international applicants for each program. All international applicants must also meet the general admissions requirements of each program, found on the program’s webpages.

English Language Requirements: TOEFL and IELTS

Our program requires a strong command of the English language. In order to ensure your success, we require a TOEFL or IELTS score from the following students:

  • Those whose native language is not English;
  • Those from countries where English is one of the official languages, but not necessarily the first language of the majority of the population;
  • Those from countries where English is not a native language, although available as a language of instruction at all or some levels of schooling;
  • Those whose transcripts are not in English or are from schools in non-English speaking countries

For more information on these tests, please contact Educational Testing Service (TOEFL), PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000; telephone (609) 921-9000; e-mail: toefl@ets.org.

If test scores are older than two years, the applicant may be required to take the test again.

TOEFL/IELTS Scores: applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The ETS institution code is 2553. A foreign applicant who has earned an undergraduate or previous graduate degree from an institution in which English is the official language of instruction may request, in writing, that this requirement be waived. Documentation to support the claim that English was the language of instruction is also required if the institution is in a country where a language other than English is the official or most common language. The Graduate School reserves the right to grant or deny the request.

If test scores are older than two years, the applicant may be required to take the test again.

Foreign Transcript Evaluation

Official transcripts of all U.S. college courses, degrees, and diplomas are required and should be sent directly to the centralized application system (CAS) through which you apply (if applicable) or directly to the GSBMS Office of Admissions. All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an approved organization with a conversion to U.S. credit hours, cumulative GPA and course grades. We recommend World Education Services (WES) for the evaluation of your foreign transcripts.
