Electives

The Department of Neurosurgery offers the following electives to NYMC students:

1. Neurosurgery Elective
2. Neurocritical Care Elective
3. Research Elective

If you are a fourth-year medical student applying to the Neurosurgery Residency, we also offer a one-month sub-internship during the months of July-October for both NYMC students and visiting students. If you would like to rotate as a visiting student, you must apply through VSAS.

Summer Program

The Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology are offering a six-week Neuroscience Summer Research Program for rising 2nd year New York Medical College Students for 2024. The program is led by two faculty members: Jared Pisapia, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Fawaz Al-Mufti, MD, Associate Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Radiology. The primary focus of the program is on research.

Students in the program will:

• Participate in a research project under the guidance of a faculty preceptor. The program provides an opportunity for students to become immersed in a research project to which they can actively contribute, with the objective of producing a publishable manuscript.
• Present one’s project in an informal setting attended by other students and the programs Co-Directors.
• Be provided an introduction into clinical neuroscience.
• Attend departmental lectures and workshops over the course of the summer.
• Meet with a research mentor on a weekly basis to review assigned tasks and monitor progress.

Applicants must commit to the entire six-week experience. If you are interested in applying for this year's program, please submit an application by Monday, March 4. If you have any questions about the application process, please contact Lynda.George@wmchealth.org 

Medical Students

New York Medical College students interested in a career in Neurosurgery should contact the Residency Coordinator, Christine Loscri.

Other resources for students interested in a career in Neurosurgery include the Medical Student Neurosurgery Training Center (MSNTC). MSNTC is a student-led organization that provides hands-on and web-based education to medical students around the world pursuing careers in neurological surgery. Visit the MSNTC website to explore their course offerings, student resources, and mentorship opportunities.
