Emergency Medicine
The Department of Emergency Medicine faculty at New York Medical College (NYMC) is committed to providing the highest quality education in the exciting field of emergency medicine and promoting an environment conducive to academic and personal growth. The original NYMC-sponsored Emergency Medicine Residency Program at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan was the first emergency medicine program in Manhattan and is the second oldest program in New York State.
Research
The emergency medicine faculty at NYC Health + Hospital/Metropolitan and Westchester Medical Center welcomes the opportunity to conduct research projects alongside medical students and residents. Students will also be able to observe and work closely with the attending staff at the medical centers and develop a better understanding of emergency medicine as a subspecialty.
As part of the summer research program, students gain experience performing literature searches, writing research protocols, collecting data in a clinical setting, and understanding the concepts of validity and statistical significance. Students attend weekly EM department conferences and research team meetings. At the successful completion of the eight-week program, students receive letters documenting their participation and are encouraged to continue working with their research team if they so choose.
Medical Student Education
Faculty in emergency medicine teach during the preclinical years as part of the foundational courses.
Third-year medical students can choose to learn more about the field of emergency medicine during an elective offered at three NYMC clinical affiliates – NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, Good Samaritan Hospital, and the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Fourth-year students have the option of both a four-week elective and an elective sub-internship which exposes them to the unique experience of an emergency medicine intern, including rounding on patients daily, presenting on team rounds, and performing procedures as appropriate.
Emergency Medicine Residency Program
One of the greatest strengths of the three-year NYMC Emergency Medicine Residency Program at the NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan/Harlem is the cultural diversity of patient populations and medical practice patterns. The residents participate in patient care in different emergency practice settings, including NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and Harlem Hospital in Manhattan.
