Family and Community Medicine

Established in 1978, the Department of Family and Community Medicine has a long history of providing excellence in education and clinical care. The Department works to produce sufficient primary care physicians to meet the needs of the New York metro area and the broader United States and aims to ensure that every student and family medicine resident is equipped with the community and preventive medicine education and training they need to excel as doctors to enhance public health and operate effectively within our complex healthcare system.

Established in 2019, the Family Health Center provides comprehensive patient care to members of the campus and local community. Staffed by the Department of Family and Community Medicine academic faculty, we see patients of all ages, addressing acute, chronic, and preventive care.

Research

The Department of Family and Community Medicine supports the research activities of our affiliated residency programs, in addition to performing clinical research on campus. Our research spans diverse interests, encompassing studies on the Zika virus, Coronavirus, and the identification and management of hypertension in a dental setting. Each spring, our residents, students, and faculty present their research in person at the Annual Family and Community Medicine Research Day.

Education

Undergraduate Medical Education (UME)

The Department oversees a required third-year clerkship in Family Medicine for all medical students. With a network of preceptors in the tri-state area, students are matched at private practices, community health centers, and NYMC-affiliated residency programs. We also offer fourth-year electives such as a sub-internship in partnership with Northwell Phelps Hospital, an elective in complementary and alternative medicine, and outpatient electives with local practices. Our clinical clerkship and elective offerings are exclusive to New York Medical College students.

Graduate Medical Education (GME)

We proudly host an NYMC-sponsored Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers, New York, that is dedicated to patient-centered care for urban populations and is actively engaged with its communities.
