Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery is a specialized medical field dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions, including injuries and disorders of the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at New York Medical College (NYMC) is committed to delivering high-quality patient care, advancing the field through groundbreaking research, and educating future orthopedic surgeons who are both technically skilled and patient-centered. The Department’s expertise spans all key orthopedic subspecialties, such as joint replacement, sports medicine, orthopedic trauma, spine surgery, pediatric orthopedics, hand and upper extremity surgery, and orthopedic oncology.

Research

Research aimed at advancing treatment options and improving patient outcomes is a cornerstone of the Department. Faculty members actively engage in a wide array of research projects, often collaborating with medical students, with their findings regularly published in leading peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. This research encompasses various aspects of orthopaedic surgery, including the development of innovative surgical techniques, advancements in joint replacement technologies, injury prevention strategies, and the exploration of regenerative medicine for musculoskeletal repair.

Medical Student Education

The Department offers two-week selective rotations to third-year medical students. Students may choose to rotate in the adult or pediatric divisions. NYMC offers one-month sub-internships in orthopaedic surgery for NYMC and visiting students to provide students with an opportunity to gain experience in the evaluation and treatment of general and subspecialty orthopaedics in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Medical students are expected to be actively involved in morning rounds, surgical cases, and emergency room activities including casting and splinting. At the end of the rotation, medical students present on a topic of their choice to the residents and attending staff.
