Otolaryngology

Otolaryngology (also called otolaryngology-head and neck surgery) is a surgical subspecialty within medicine that deals with conditions of the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) and related structures of the head and neck. Patients seek treatment from an otorhinolaryngologist for diseases of the ear, nose, throat, base of the skull, and for the surgical management of cancers and benign tumors of the head and neck.

Faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology at New York Medical College include specialists who have received fellowship training in many areas of otolaryngology, including pediatric otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, thyroid surgery, sinus surgery, neurotology/otology (hearing disorders), laryngology (voice and swallowing disorders), and immunology and are Board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.

Research

Members of the Department of Otolaryngology are engaged in basic science, clinical and translational research. Research projects include wet-lab, bioinformatic, and literature-based research. Two faculty members are based in basic science/translational research laboratories, and additional projects have been conducted using those laboratories as cornerstones, including animal-based research. Student participation in Department research have included M.S., Ph.D., M.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. students.

The Department of Otolaryngology Faculty have published extensively in the field. Medical students also collaborate with faculty and residents on studies and have the opportunity to publish in major journals and present at national conferences. Each year medical students have the opportunity to present at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research. Our M.D.-Ph.D. students have presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and COSM - Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings (COSM).

Medical Student Education

Electives in both the third and fourth years of medical school provide opportunities for medical students to learn more about a career in otolaryngology. Students participate in scheduled conferences, clinics, and teaching rounds to learn how to evaluate and treat patients with a wide range of conditions generally seen by otolaryngologists.

3rd Year Rotations: The Department of Otolaryngology offers a two-week selective rotation to 3rd year New York Medical College Students. Students rotate both in the office and in the hospital and operating rooms.

4th Year Rotations: A four-week sub-internship is offered from May through October for NYMC medical students and visiting students. This is to provide students the opportunity to gain experience in the evaluation and treatment of general and subspecialty otolaryngology in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Students are expected to be actively involved in rounds, inpatient consultations, and surgical cases. At the end of the rotation, medical students are expected to give a 30-minute presentation on a topic of their choice to the residents, physician assistants and attending staff.
