Department of Rehabilitation Sciences
The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences in the New York Medical College School of Health Sciences and Practice is the nexus of groundbreaking research, state-of-the-art clinical practices and high-caliber education, fostering an environment that combines innovative thinking with compassionate care.
Rehabilitation sciences is a field that focuses on improving the quality of life for individuals with physical, cognitive and psychosocial disabilities. We explore and try to understand the complex nature of human health, and aim to break new grounds and push boundaries in the rehabilitation field, so that everyone, regardless of their condition, has the best opportunity to function at their highest potential and partake in society fully and freely.
Our department is home to two distinguished programs: the Division of Physical Therapy and the Division of Speech-Language Pathology. These are two of the fastest-growing and impactful disciplines within healthcare, serving an increasingly diverse population of patients and making an enormous difference in their lives every day.
- Our Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) program has a rich tradition of academic excellence and a commitment to evidence-based practice. We train our students to become expert clinicians who can diagnose and manage movement dysfunctions caused by a broad spectrum of conditions. Through hands-on clinical training, advanced simulation technology and transformative patient-centered experiences, our graduates are well-equipped to lead and innovate within this dynamic field.
- The Master of Science (M.S.) in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program is at the forefront of cutting-edge research and clinical practice related to communication and swallowing disorders. Our students are mentored by leading faculty who are renowned researchers and skilled practitioners, providing them with a strong foundation and advanced skills needed to assess, diagnose and treat a variety of populations across the lifespan. Our program empowers graduates to be reflective practitioners, dedicated researchers and advocates for those with communication challenges.
Both programs place a strong emphasis on research, aiming to generate knowledge that will transform practice and improve patient outcomes. Students are encouraged to engage in research endeavors alongside faculty, presenting at national conferences and contributing to the field's knowledge base.
Our commitment extends beyond the classroom and the clinic. We believe in cultivating a culture of empathy, respect, and inclusivity. We uphold the belief that diversity enriches the learning experience and leads to innovative and empathetic healthcare solutions.
In the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, we strive to pave the way for a future where every individual, regardless of their health condition, can reach their highest potential. We invite you to join us in our mission to shape the future of rehabilitative care, create new knowledge and transform lives one person at a time.
