About the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBMS) at NYMC offers a range of M.S. and Ph.D. programs focused on advancing biomedical knowledge. Located on NYMC's beautiful, suburban campus in Valhalla, New York, we share faculty with NYMC’s School of Medicine (SOM) and provide students with exceptional opportunities to conduct meaningful research as they learn.
Whether you aim to discover the next life-changing drug or vaccine, investigate the principles of cell physiology and biochemistry, pursue a medical career, educate the next generation of researchers, or manage a science-focused non-profit, our programs will help you achieve your goals.
Academic Programs
We offer M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the six biomedical science disciplines. Our M.S. programs also include a two-year interdisciplinary biomedical sciences master’s program, an accelerated one-year interdisciplinary program for pre-med students, and a master's degree in clinical laboratory sciences. Students in the M.S. disciplinary programs have the option of taking the Biomedical Sciences Management Program track.
- M.S. Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (two-year)
- M.S. Accelerated Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (one-year)
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Cell Biology
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Pathology
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Pharmacology
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Physiology
- M.S. in Biomedical Science & Management - Professional Science Master's Program
- M.S. in Clinical Laboratory Sciences
- M.S. Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences – Dental Linker Program
- M.D.-Ph.D. dual degree with the NYMC SOM (open to enrolled NYMC medical students only)

Academic Paths in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
Prepare for Medical School or Professional Health Programs
Looking to apply to dental school, medical school, a physician’s assistant (PA) or other professional health program? The Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences 2-year M.S. program is designed to strengthen your skills and knowledge before you apply. The highly competitive Accelerated iBMS program allows qualified students to take selected pre-clinical medical school courses and complete the requirements for a maser's degree in one year.
Prepare for Technical and Management Roles
If you are looking to achieve a senior technical or managerial position in the biomedical industry or academia, our master’s degree programs can help you get there. Our Biomedical Science & Management (BSM) program allows you to combine scientific core knowledge with a foundation in business and a real-world, project-based internship. Combining scholarship and professionalism, the Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) program gives you the knowledge and technical skills necessary to become a skilled clinical laboratory scientist.
Explore Research Interests with Ph.D. Laboratory Rotations
The Integrated Ph.D. Program (IPP) focuses on core scientific knowledge and the interrelatedness of biomedical science disciplines. The curriculum provides you with an opportunity to rotate through three different laboratories before deciding on an area of specialization for your dissertation.
Why Choose the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences?
Aspiring researchers, scientists and health professionals, choose our school because they know they’ll have everything they need to drive innovation and discovery. With more than 200,000 square feet of research space, the GSBMS benefits from a team of 100 dedicated faculty members in the biomedical sciences who support students and conduct research, including the annual development of the flu vaccine “seed” viruses. Here are a few important reasons why the GSBMS at NYMC stands out:
Advanced Labs and Facilities
As a GSBMS student, you’ll have access to advanced, fully equipped physical resources, including research laboratories and core facilities that offer state-of-the-art investigative equipment.
We also have a Comparative Medicine Facility (accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care) that provides excellent housing and husbandry for research animals, including several procedure rooms for veterinary treatment.
Individualized Attention from Expert Faculty
Our 2:1 student-faculty ratio allows you to have an extraordinary level of individual attention from instructors and advisors. Many of our advanced courses have fewer than 15 students per class. 99 percent of our faculty members have doctorates and are on the cutting edge of research in their respective fields.
Groundbreaking Research
NYMC attracts more than $30 million annually in external funding for biomedical research projects. GSBMS faculty conduct research projects funded by federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), NASA, the Department of Defense, several non-profit foundations and numerous other extramural research programs. Our faculty and Ph.D. candidates are actively engaged in interdisciplinary research projects, investigating everything from the molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease to the genetics of viral pathogens.
Ideal Location
We are located on a 54-acre suburban campus in Westchester County, NY. With our location in the scenic lower Hudson Valley and only 25 miles from midtown Manhattan, there are ample opportunities for clinical work and laboratory rotations at a variety of partner facilities and medical centers. Sharing our campus with NYMC’s School of Medicine, the School of Health Sciences and Practice, the Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC, Westchester Medical Center and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, enriches our collaborative learning environment.
