M.S. Programs in Biomedical Sciences

The Graduate School offers ten Master of Science programs – including an interdisciplinary program offered in both traditional and accelerated tracks as well as our new Clinical Laboratory Sciences program. Explore our six main disciplines and our pre-professional tracks.

General Program Requirements

Each program requires a minimum of 30 credits. Students must write either a Master’s Literature Review of a current field of investigation, or a Master’s Thesis based on original laboratory research performed under the guidance of a graduate faculty mentor.

All programs are full-time. The Accelerated Master’s Program, Dental Linker, and Clinical Lab Sciences offer daytime classes, while all other programs offer evening classes.

All programs are completed within two years, with the exception of the Accelerated Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (iBMS) master’s program, which is completed within one year. Although the Accelerated iBMS program can “decelerate” if necessary, the 2-year programs can’t speed up. Most or all credits earned in pursuit of an M.S. degree in one of the six basic sciences can be applied towards Ph.D. degree requirements.

Our master’s programs in Biomedical Sciences prepare you for a successful career as a researcher, manager or teacher. The M.S. program also prepares you to continue your biomedical sciences journey towards a Ph.D., M.D., or other medical training.

M.S. Program Disciplines

We offer six specialized M.S. programs each focused on a separate discipline in the sciences. All of our programs use a multidisciplinary approach, so you’ll become familiar with additional areas of scientific inquiry as they relate to your specialization.

Pre-Professional M.S. Programs and Tracks

We offer a variety of different tracks designed to meet your specific needs as a biomedical sciences student. Explore your options and see which one best fits your career goals.

If you’re interested in working in private industry or the government, especially in a supervisory role, our Biomedical Science & Management Track is a good fit. For each of the six discipline-specific M.S. programs, we offer a Biomedical Science & Management - Professional Science Master’s (PSM) track that will train you in both science and corporate skills.

This 36-credit track is designed specifically for students interested in pursuing careers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or other biomedical science industries, and related agencies or nonprofits. The program is ideal for those who are currently employed and want to broaden their experience in new areas while obtaining a terminal master’s degree.

The M.S. Program in Clinical Laboratory Sciences is a completely separate track from our six main disciplines. In this degree program, you’ll train as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) and prepare for New York State licensure. A CLS needs specialized training and knowledge in order to perform clinical tests, such as toxicology, urinalysis, and hematology testing, for physicians and hospital staff. CLS are also qualified to work in industrial and pharmaceutical laboratories.

Our ~42 credit Clinical Laboratory Sciences M.S. program aims to graduate driven scientists who are interested in a focused, practical career path in biomedical science. Although this is a two-year program, you can potentially start working in the field before graduating with a provisional permit.

Our Accelerated Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences M.S. program allows you to complete your studies in only one year. You’ll develop a broad understanding of each discipline in biomedical science, such as pathology and biochemistry, and better understand how all six disciplines intersect.

The main purpose of the Accelerated M.S. program is to prepare you for medical school. This highly competitive program will improve your academic credentials and give you the biomedical science experience to make your application stand out. As the program only allows 15-25 students per year, you’ll receive comprehensive guidance from faculty advisors to help you on your medical journey.

The Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences M.S. program covers topics in the six main biomedical science disciplines and prepares you for a professional science career. This 2-year program is best for students planning to apply for further study in medicine, dentistry, a physician assistant program or research.

Courses are scheduled in the late afternoon/evening, allowing students the opportunity to work during the day or engage in other preparatory activities for their science career. Recent graduates of the program have enrolled in medical school, dental school, nursing school, ARC-PA accredited physician assistant programs, joined the pharmaceutical industry, and entered doctoral programs.

Like our Accelerated M.S. program, the Dental Linker program takes place over one year and allows you to improve your academic credentials. The Dental Linker program is only open to students who are referred directly from the Touro College of Dental Medicine admissions committee, or occasionally referred from other dental colleges.

The students referred to our Dental Linker program showed promise during the application process to dental school, but would benefit from stronger academics, and the increased knowledge and critical thinking skills developed from graduate work in the sciences. Excelling at introductory dentistry courses and biomedical science courses allows our linkage students to improve their prospects for future dental school applications. Visit our Dental Linker program page for more information and course descriptions.
