Biomedical Science Programs

Our M.S. and Ph.D. biomedical science programs prepare you for a fulfilling career as a researcher, manager, clinical lab scientist and more. Choose from six specializations - biochemistry and molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology and immunology, pathology, pharmacology, or physiology - and from multiple tracks depending on your research and career goals. All of our graduate programs are full-time and on-campus.

As a student in the GSBMS, you will have opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research projects, which span areas like cardiovascular disease, neuroscience, cancer, infectious diseases, regulation of gene expression, cell signaling and embryological development. Our faculty experts and extensive resources support your professional goals on your scientific journey.

Each of our programs meets our carefully crafted, intentional and rigorous educational objectives.

Biomedical Science Programs Overview

Our Six M.S. / Ph.D. Specializations

Our six disciplines are available for both M.S. and Ph.D. study. We have postdoctoral studies in each of the disciplines. Contact the specific academic departments for postdoctoral opportunities.

Most or all credits earned towards an M.S. degree in one of the six biomedical sciences can also later be applied towards Ph.D. degree requirements. All standard Master’s program tracks are ~30 credits.

MCAT scores are required for consideration into the Accelerated iBMS program, but standardized test scores are no longer required for the Ph.D. and two-year M.S. programs. We strongly recommend that if you have taken any of these tests, you submit your scores to support your application. Should you choose to submit test scores, they must be received by the GSBMS by the deadline date.

BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

This discipline explores biochemical processes and understanding of the life sciences at the molecular level.

CELL BIOLOGY

Cell Biology analyzes the function and structure of cells and organelles, and explores topics like cell cycle and metabolism.

MICROBIOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY

Microbiology focuses on microorganisms like bacteria and viruses, and how they cause disease, while immunology explores the function of our immune system in bacterial and viral pathogenesis.

PATHOLOGY

Pathology studies the cause, diagnosis and treatment of disease, and research in this field allows us to better treat illnesses like cancer and viral infections.

PHARMACOLOGY

The study of pharmacology is essential to developing, evaluating and testing new drugs, and allows us to find new cures for diseases and disorders.

PHYSIOLOGY

Drawing on multiple areas of medical science, physiology analyzes how the parts of an organism function and interact, from biomolecules to organ systems.
