While volunteering at a local hospital during high school, Katherine Kowalski, B.S.N.-RN, ANP-C, developed an interest in Nursing. After graduating with a B.S.N., she began working at Stony Brook University Hospital on a Neurosurgical Floor with acutely ill, post-surgical and intubated patients. During the seven years Ms. Kowalski worked on this unit, she developed many of the important skills having to do with acute medical care and psychosocial skills needed to deal with this population and their families. Ms. Kowalski was able to earn her M.S.N. while working as a Registered Nurse. She then began her career as an Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner at New York Presbyterian Hospital. There, Ms. Kowalski developed additional skill sets directly related to caring for the working adult population. She managed blood and body fluid exposures, work related injuries, walk in/scheduled acute illnesses, latent TB counseling and coordinated the PPD testing schedule for the NYPH staff. After moving with her husband and children to Westchester New York, Ms. Kowalski was able to work per diem at NYPH psych division in White Plains. There, she again developed unique skills needed to deliver medical care for the acutely ill psychiatric patient. Presently, Ms. Kowalski is very proud to be working as the full time Nurse Practitioner in the Health Services Department here at NYMC. She has been able to use all her education and acquired clinical skills to assist the students, faculty and staff of NYMC.
