Student Clubs & Organizations

The American Medical Association (AMA) NYMC chapter is dedicated to representing our medical students, improving access and quality of medical education, developing professional capabilities and promoting physician wellness throughout the U.S. and especially within New York State through the Medical State Society of New York (MSSNY) and the Westchester County Medical Society (WCMS). Members of the AMA club attend MSSNY resolution reviews and conferences throughout the year and WCMS meetings monthly. The AMA club also hosts an annual wine night with the WCMS where students can meet Westchester physicians and learn about local wines.

The mission of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) NYMC Student Chapter is to provide support, leadership and opportunities to engage in the field of neurosurgery within an inclusive environment that fosters teamwork, responsibility and personal development. Events have included a Day in the Life, where neurosurgery residents spoke candidly about their daily lives, a service event supporting the Burke Rehabilitation Heels and Wheels 5K, bi-monthly rounds with the chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, subspecialty talks with attending physicians and a departmental journal club.

The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the only and largest student-run organization in the country, represents medical students with the goal of improving health care and healthcare delivery to all people. The focus of events in the 2023-2024 school year for the NYMC Chapter include public/community health, REACH (Race, Ethnicity, and Culture in Health Action), and gender and sexuality.

The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) NYMC chapter empowers female-identifying students to advocate for causes that improve the working conditions of female-identifying physicians. Fundraisers planned throughout the year include the annual FIGS scrub order and a book drive. AMWA also organizes mentorship opportunities for club members with other NYMC students, including the galantine mixer, and a spring mentorship dinner for students and women physicians to network.

The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association NYMC chapter promotes issues in the field of medical education, explores unique challenges, obstacles and responsibilities specific to Asian Pacific American medical students and physicians, provides opportunities for students to give back to the community and represents Asian Pacific American students as a group within the healthcare community at NYMC. Activities and events have included group boba runs, game nights, AAPI Trivia Night, fundraising for the AAPI community through Pockygrams and the annual Lunar New Year Party.

The student-led NYMC Chapter of the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS), founded in 2021, is committed to supporting women surgeons at various stages in their careers. AWS aims to engage current and future women surgeons to realize their professional and personal goals and empower women to succeed and excel in those aspirations through mentorship, education and a networking community that promotes their contributions and achievements as students, surgeons and leaders. Club activities have included mentor/mentee match-ups between class years for those interested in surgical specialties, an annual panel discussion with women surgeons at WMC and affiliated hospitals, suture clinics, community outreach and community service events.

The CDMA chapter at NYMC and Touro College of Dental Medicine provides a space for those interested in learning more about the Bible and the story of redemption therein culminating in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Activities include regular weekly Bible studies and weekly prayer meetings and other events on- and off-campus, including hikes, dinners, apple picking, bowling, as well as volunteering together in the surrounding communities. Meetings are held weekly for Bible study and to spend time together, as well as Sunday evenings to pray together.

The LMSA Chapter at NYMC, which is affiliated with the Northeast Region LMSA and National LMSA, promotes and celebrates diversity by representing Hispanic/Latinx medical students in the school community and by educating the community on healthcare issues, sociocultural barriers and other challenges faced by Hispanic/Latinx patient populations across the country. The organization also provides mentorship and a sense of community among underrepresented medical students, in addition to promoting skills and values relating to cultural competency in the healthcare setting. LMSA kicks off the year with a meet-and-greet event hosted in conjunction with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). After the first round of exams, LMSA hosts an annual barbecue with SNMA, a great opportunity for returning members to meet new members and socialize with fellow students on campus. Other events have included a Paint and Sip Night, where students painted Bob Ross-style paintings while enjoying Latino food and relaxing after class.

The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) NYMC Chapter is committed to supporting and addressing the health needs of underrepresented communities and communities of color and increasing the number of clinically excellent, clinically competent and socially conscious physicians. In addition, SNMA is dedicated both to ensuring that medical education and services are culturally sensitive to the needs of diverse populations and to increasing the number of Black, Latino and other students of color entering and completing medical school. Events have included a Juneteenth movie screening and discussion, implicit bias training for M1s, a Breast Cancer Walk with the American Cancer Society, and a Black Men in White Coats documentary screening and panel discussion.

The United Nations Association (UNA) NYMC Chapter engages with the UNA at the local, state and national levels. Students are encouraged to be active in UNA through special interest groups, direct membership with UNA-NYC, UNA internship opportunities, national competitions, county and state meetings and national UNA conferences and events.

The Anesthesia Interest Group provides medical students with exposure to the anesthesiology specialty through mentorship, education, hands-on experience and exploration of career opportunities with different career specialists in the field of anesthesia.

Through the Cancer Education and Awareness Program, medical students educate middle school students about cancer with the hope of inspiring a future generation of doctors.

The Cardiology Interest Group serves as a resource for students to explore the field of cardiology as a clinical specialization and as a discipline of biomedical research, as well as about the potential careers within the field. The group also provides its members with educational and community service opportunities related to the field of cardiology, including seminars emphasizing career strategies, lectures on current topics in cardiology, research opportunities within the field and patient/community education events to inform the community on preventative strategies.

The Dermatology Interest Group promotes interest in the specialty of dermatology among current medical students and helps facilitate student engagement in academic research. Events include information sessions on research and residency in dermatology, post-match meetings (Q&A with matched students) and community service events.

The Emergency Medicine Interest Group connects medical students with an expressed interest in pursuing a career as emergency medicine physicians. Through the NYMC Center for Disaster Medicine (CDM) students learn standard and improvised methods of patient assessment, airway management, bleeding control, etc. Students train in the CDM Sensory Impairment Rooms, where they practice skills learned under conditions of sensory overload and/or deprivation.

The Endocrinology Interest Group provides resources for students interested in the field of endocrinology through speakers, shadowing opportunities, interactive sessions and information about research. The club will host a series of talks by endocrinologists specializing in different areas including pediatrics, diabetes, neuroendocrinology and thyroid diseases and also will act as the ongoing liaison between NYMC students and Westchester Medical Center faculty for the purpose of matching up students with shadowing and research opportunities.

The Family Medicine Interest Group supports and educates students interested in pursuing family medicine as a specialty by showcasing the wide scope of careers available in family medicine, as well as assisting students in finding mentors with similar interests in the field. Recent activities have included narrative medicine and nutrition in medicine workshops and a Women's Health Forum, each led by expert physicians, as well as student-run meetings to share information on family medicine as a field and preparation for the third-year clerkship.

The Geriatrics and Palliative Care Interest Group (GeriPals) fosters interest in and excitement for the fields of geriatric and palliative medicine. With a rapidly aging population and an evolving health care landscape, knowledge about these fields is essential to all specialties. By partnering with local geriatricians and palliative care physicians, GeriPals helps NYMC students become better equipped to provide care for aging, dying and chronically ill patients. GeriPals is currently working to develop a student volunteer program with the Palliative Care Department at Westchester Medical Center, with the aim of providing companionship to patients receiving long-term and end-of-life care. Ongoing projects include working with the Hudson Valley Alzheimer’s Association to host talks about Alzheimer’s disease research and caregiver resources.

The Infectious Disease Interest Group highlights how diverse and interesting the field of infectious disease can be. Situated at the intersection of public health, epidemiology and clinical practice, infectious disease is an incredibly collaborative specialty that involves cutting-edge research, social determinants of health and an incredible variety of patients on a day-to-day basis. Activities include microbiology reviews, career panels, as well as the facilitation of research and shadowing opportunities.

The Internal Medicine Interest Group fosters interest and awareness of the internal medicine specialty and facilitates networking and mentorship with internal medicine physicians. Through the club, students can explore their interest in internal medicine, gain exposure to various subspecialties within the field and foster connections with other students. Events have included Q&A sessions with internal medicine physicians and a post-match Q&A with newly matched NYMC fourth-year medical students.

The Interventional Radiology Interest Group raises awareness of the fairly new medical specialty of interventional radiology. The club meets monthly and frequently brings in interventional radiologists to speak about the procedures and emerging technology they use, as well as hosting mini radiology lectures on such subjects as how to read a chest x-ray.

The OB/GYN Interest Group provides educational, social and professional opportunities for students related to the field of obstetrics and gynecology. The group hosts many activities over the course of the year, including panels with doctors from different subspecialties, simulation events to gain exposure to material before clerkships, inter-club collaborations with other groups, such as the Radiology Interest Group and Medical Students for Choice, as well as social events to bring together those interested in women's health.

The Oncology Interest Group provides students with opportunities to explore what a career in oncology looks like. Some activities include No Shave November when the club hosts a competition to see who can grow the most creative beard to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer and the Movember Foundation. Previous events have also included Q&A sessions with oncologists and research meetings.

The Ophthalmology Interest Group guides interested students on their journey toward becoming ophthalmologists by promoting education, research and community service in ophthalmology. Through educational events, students learn about the basics of becoming an ophthalmologist, as well as the anatomy of the eye and common ocular pathologies, and panel discussions with working ophthalmologists expose students to different subspecialists. During a recent community service event, students performed visual exams on economically disadvantaged/homeless individuals in Westchester.

The Orthopedic Interest Group gives medical students greater exposure to the field of orthopedic surgery through educational talks with physicians and residents in the field, hands-on clinical skills sessions on suturing and splinting/casting, Q&A sessions with medical students who matched in the field and joint sessions with other interest groups.

The Otolaryngology (ENT) Interest Group spreads awareness of the field of ENT to interested medical students at NYMC, while providing opportunities to make connections with ENT physicians. Activities include informative panels with ENT physicians from Westchester Medical Center, discussions with NYMC alumni who are current ENT residents at various institutions and a post-match panel with NYMC M4s who matched in ENT.

The Pathology Interest Group exposes medical students to the field of pathology through faculty Q&A sessions, research opportunities and shadowing experiences. Future plans include a pathology lab tour and more Q&A sessions with pathologists from various sub-specialties.

The Pediatrics Interest Group (PIG) connects medical students interested in a career in pediatrics. PIG showcases the many subspecialties of pediatrics through career talks with residents, fellows, and attending physicians, including many NYMC alumni, giving students the opportunity to engage with current practitioners about their experiences. The group also works with Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center to coordinate clinical skills sessions, clinical shadowing and research opportunities, as well as child life volunteering throughout the school year. The PIG also hosts a Q&A session with fourth-year students who match in pediatrics each spring.

The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Interest Group provides medical students with opportunities to learn about the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation by connecting students with attendings and residents who specialize in various fields through lectures and Q&A sessions. The group also connects students to various residency programs and PM&R societal events to network and learn from leading physicians in the field.

The Plastic Surgery Interest Group gives students the opportunity to learn about the various subspecialties within plastic surgery and practice essential plastic surgery techniques. The club also provides a platform for students to identify faculty, resident and medical student mentors to provide guidance on career, residency match and research opportunities in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The Psychiatry Interest Group provides a setting in which members can engage with fellow students, residents, attendings and faculty to learn more about the field of psychiatry, with a particular focus on personal career development, local community initiatives and global support for psychiatry and mental health organizations. Events include a pumpkin carving event in the fall and a gardening event in the spring with patients at the Behavioral Health Center, student wellness events throughout the year and initiatives in the general community, including local health fairs, programs to support national and global organizations, such as National Alliance on Mental Illness, and career-focused events, including post-match sessions with M3/M4 students.

The Radiation Oncology Interest Group provides opportunities and information and generates interest in the field of radiation oncology through discussions and information sessions with radiation oncologists throughout the year. Following Match Day each spring, a post-match meeting with M4 students entering the field is held and research projects and other opportunities are shared among members of the group.

The Rheumatology Interest Group provides opportunities to learn more about the speciality of rheumatology and paths within the field. Students can participate in rheumatology shadowing at Westchester Medical Center, gain insights into research experiences, and speak with practicing physicians regarding their experiences in the field. 

The Student Interest Group in Neurology offers interested students the opportunity to explore a potential career in neurology by increasing exposure to the diverse nature of the field, which encompasses numerous subdivisions, including stroke medicine, endovascular neurology and neurocritical care. Activities include EEG decoding seminars, MRI/CT/angiography reading workshops, 5K fundraisers, podcasts featuring guest lectures from distinguished neurologists and neurosurgeons, M1 Brain and Behavior review sessions and attendance at the Annual New York Neurological Society Winter Conference.

The Surgery Interest Group is focused on increasing the exposure of medical students in the field of surgery. A variety of events are planned throughout the year, including suture and splint clinics and panel events with surgeons from Westchester Medical Center, to familiarize medical students with different specialties within the field.

The Urology Interest Group exposes interested students to the specialty of urology. Activities have included an endoscopy workshop in the Westchester Medical Center skills lab where students were able to gain hands-on experience with different endoscopes, a mini-symposium dinner with urology attending physicians to learn more about the different subspecialties in urology and the match process and a post-match meeting where M4s who have successfully matched into urology can answer questions about the process.

The Vascular Surgery Interest Group seeks to educate medical students about the field of vascular surgery through mentorship, networking and community outreach. Students learn from experienced practitioners, engage in hands-on activities and gain exposure to research opportunities in the field.

The Anki Club supports students with achieving their study goals by using Anki efficiently. The annual ANKI 101: Jumpstart the Year event helps incoming students with strategies on using Anki and provides workshops on how to make effective study cards. The club also helps to coordinate the in-house Anki decks for class lectures for use amongst students.

The student-led NYMC Chapter of the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS), founded in 2021, is committed to supporting women surgeons at various stages in their careers. Club activities have included mentor/mentee match-ups between class years for those interested in surgical specialties, an annual panel discussion with women surgeons at WMC and affiliated hospitals, suture clinics, community outreach and community service events.

This club is an official chapter of Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP). Our goal is to fulfill the BNGAP mission of helping diverse medical students and residents become aware of academic medicine as a career option. We aim to provide NYMC students and residents with the resources to further explore and potentially embark upon an academic career. Our club's activities include hosting 2 lectures or workshops per year to promote awareness of academic medicine career opportunities, the submission of a scholarly project, and participation in a BNGAP Regional or National Academic Medicine Career Development Conference for Diverse Medical Students and Residents.

The Business in Medicine Club provides an environment on campus where students can learn about topics related to the business of medicine to help students gain exposure to essential, non-clinical, aspects of the field. Topics include financial literacy, strategy and innovation, insurance, leadership and career development and feature speakers in “business” positions throughout the medical field.

The Clinical Chinese Club (CCC) provides educational, professional and service opportunities for NYMC students of all backgrounds to acquire Chinese language and cultural competency that will foster future healthcare providers to provide more sensitive and comprehensive care for Chinese-speaking patients. CCC holds Chinese clinical language workshops on themes such as basic phrases and chief complaints and history of present illness, offered both in-person and over Zoom, where members take turns practicing speaking Chinese with each other. CCC also collaborates with other cultural clubs, such as Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association. In 2023, the two clubs jointly celebrated the Lunar New Year with a catered dinner and games.

The Clinical Skills Club provides opportunities for students to learn and practice clinical skills that will be useful in their M3 and M4 clerkships and during their careers as physicians. As a student-run group, the Club offers a welcoming atmosphere where students can help one another, while also incorporating expert perspectives and advice into events with invited guests to ensure that clinical skills are practiced safely and accurately.

The need for prevention and new forms of disease management continues to grow throughout the U.S. healthcare system. To address this, The Culinary Medicine Interest Group aims to increase the number of future physicians graduating from the NYMC SOM with a foundation, understanding, and the necessary skills to deliver nutrition integrated care to their patients that is both evidence-based and culturally competent, regardless of specialty. Some events and activities include community outreach - local and widespread community events, food insecurity, interprofessional collaborations and nutrition education programs - education materials, newsletters, speakers/podcast, and research opportunities. Culinary Medicine Club food meets 1-4 times per month depending on the event schedule.

The Disaster Medicine Club brings an intersectional medical perspective to NYMC students, allowing them to learn how to manage adverse events in non-medical settings competently. Disaster Medicine encompasses a wide range of medical fields, particularly aspects of emergency medicine, low-resource medicine, wilderness medicine and infectious disease. Recent events have included participation in a simulated mass casualty airport event hosted by Westchester County.

Education Beyond Bars is committed to advancing the educational aspirations of both incarcerated individuals and those who have been previously incarcerated. In collaboration with the Yonkers based organization, 914 United, tutors with Education Beyond Bars strive to provide virtual tutoring for locals in the community, and work with younger students at Woodfield Cottage.

The Environmental Health Student Interest Group at NYMC is dedicated to raising awareness about the crucial intersection between the environment and health. Through various initiatives and events, the group strives to equip students with the knowledge and understanding of environmental issues and how they directly impact public and individual health. The group envisions a more sustainable campus and actively advocates for eco-friendly practices and policies. One of our successful endeavors was advocating for composting in Grasslands, promoting responsible waste management and reducing our carbon footprint.

Fighting Cancer Today at NYMC is committed to providing direct and personalized emotional support to underserved cancer patients. Students serve as volunteer "patient advocates" and are responsible for supporting one to two cancer patients undergoing treatment to ensure that patients have access to essential resources, such as functioning utilities, gas cards and care packages. Students meet with families virtually on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis.

The Food Insecurity Medical Outreach Club connects NYMC students with local food pantries. Rotating students give back by both assisting with the general needs of the food pantry and through medical tents that offer basic medical assistance to pantry visitors. Weekly volunteering opportunities take place at the Mount Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry and food drives are held in the fall and spring.

The Harm Reduction Club facilitates the inclusion and discussion of harm reduction as a strategy to combat the overdose epidemic in this country at the medical school level. Harm reduction has its basis in favoring education and compassion over an abstinence-only approach, which prioritizes initiatives such as Narcan and fentanyl test strip distribution, safe injection sites, needle exchanges and advocating for drug addiction to be treated as a mental health issue rather than a criminal act to be punished. Events include Narcan training, fentanyl test strip distribution and guest speakers.

Homeless Outreach and Medical Education (HOME) aims to reduce health care disparities by connecting and serving individuals living on the streets of Westchester County by providing preventative medical care and education, food and clothing, as well as information regarding social resources. HOME consistently provides quality care regardless of socioeconomic status, connecting medical, dental and graduate students with the medically under-resourced in the community through direct street outreach and engagement with homeless shelters in the area. Events include weekly volunteer opportunities at a local homeless shelter, monthly e-board Zoom meetings and an annual health fair at a local homeless shelter/soup kitchen.

Humans of New York Medical College is a student-driven initiative that conducts peer-to-peer interviews and disseminates these narratives to the entire medical school community. The goal is to foster connectedness, promote humanism in medical education and offer opportunities for students to develop skills in narrative competence as a means of self-actualization. Activities include interviews, photography sessions and debriefs/editorial reviews before interview publication.

LGBTQIA+ Advocacy in Medicine is dedicated to uplifting LGBTQ+ students by creating a supportive community, hosting socials, advocating for inclusivity in education and beyond, and community service. The group also leads the Gender and Sexual Minorities (GSM) Lecture Series, which students can take part in to earn a GSM certificate.

The mission of the Medical Education Society (MES) is to foster and promote academic and patient care excellence among the medical students at NYMC. The MES seeks to expand upon the in-house curriculum with different learning strategies, such as through events like trivia night and rapid review sessions. The MES also seeks to create resources for students to aid them in studying, such as question guides that are shared with the entire class. The activities of the MES include hosting trivia nights or rapid review sessions before upcoming exams. Trivia nights typically utilize Kahoot and are held in an auditorium, with prizes given to top winning teams! Rapid review sessions are presentation-style where students present each lecture in 3-5 minutes only with regards to high yield information given in that lecture.

Medical Students for Choice provides education and resources on topics regarding reproductive health. This ranges from family planning to contraceptive use to abortions. Activities have included an IUD clinic, a vasectomy clinic and an abortion clinic, where students are able to practice performing an abortion on papayas.

The Medical Student Research Forum (MSRF) is an annual research conference, planned by the MSRF Committee, highlighting the research being conducted by NYMC medical students. The MSRF Committee, a group of eight students (four M1s, four M2s), are selected to plan the MSRF at the beginning of their M1 year, coordinating all aspects of the MSRF for two years to provide a seamless transitions year to year in order to put on the most well-executed, organized event possible. This year’s MSRF included more than 80 presenters, including poster presentations and oral presentations featuring members of all four class years.

Music as Medicine is a service organization that allows NYMC students to combine their passions for music performance and healing the community. Activities include singing and performing instrumental music, either solo or in groups, for people who are hurting, in need of healing or have suffered from past or current trauma. This has included performing for Holocaust survivors, at children's hospitals and homeless outreach organizations. In addition, workshops are held to compose music with community members so that they can feel empowered by creating beauty. As a purely service-oriented organization, meetings are exclusively held at places of service.

MusicRx explores the intersection of music and medicine, with the goal of learning how as individuals, students and future healers, music can be utilized to enhance the well-being of self, patients and others. MusicRx creates and distributes quarterly newsletters, which include fun, evidence-based facts about music, collaborative music playlists and stories of peers’ personal experiences with music and hosts events and volunteer opportunities, such as playing piano for patients at the entrance of Westchester Medical Center. One recent event was a Music Trivia night, complete with pizza and prizes.

Quill & Scope is the student journal of New York Medical College. Our mission is to capture medical student life and voices, as well as to showcase the talent and creativity of the student body. We publish an annual journal composed entirely of work submitted by students at NYMC and its affiliated programs. Each issue includes a unique combination of reflections, artwork, poetry, opinion pieces, and scientific articles composed and edited by medical students. Our editorial team meets a few times per term to help compile a thematically coherent issue, but we are constantly partnering with students to help them best express the thoughts, feelings, and messages they hope to get across.

Through the STEM Mentorship Club, both NYMC and Touro College of Dental Medicine students utilize their experiences in navigating science academia and applying to jobs/internships/higher education to help advise undergraduate students who wish to get involved in STEM. NYMC students are paired with undergraduate students from nearby colleges and are free to meet as often as they’d like to maximize the benefit for the mentee. The club also hosts informative panels for undergraduate students on graduate school, application cycles, the MCAT and other related topics. Mentors share a common goal of spreading awareness and facilitating the next generation of STEM professionals.

The Student Accessibility and Advocacy Network (SAAN) provides a platform for the NYMC community to give feedback on existing accessibility policies, procedures and/or programs with the goal of creating a community of advocates and supporters to normalize disability and dispel stereotypes. SAAN also works to educate the community at large about available options for accommodations and accessibility resources, as well as train future healthcare providers on how to work with patients with disabilities effectively and understand their perspectives. Activities have included Spotlight Seminars that highlight a particular type of disability, such as diabetes, autism and physical disability, with perspectives of both a patient and health care provider, Q&A panels led by students who utilize accommodations and movie nights featuring films related to accessibility.

The Technology and Innovation in Medicine Club explores how artificial intelligence, mobile health apps and virtual and augmented realities are becoming widely adopted in medicine and are rapidly revolutionizing the field of medicine. The club hosts interactive events and discussions involving the process of translating new ideas to clinical settings, ethical challenges associated with innovation and ways to integrate technology and medical innovation into our careers and future practice. Past events have included a panel of industry professionals in biotechnology and healthcare providers who incorporate technology into their practice.

The Medistorian Society was established to bring students committed to the history of medicine together collectively and provide opportunities to continue developing their understanding of "living history" regarding health inequity in the community. Through peer-to-peer discourse, the group tackles the pressing issues of modern-day healthcare through the lens of the past. To support the M1 class as they take the History of Medicine course, three trivia nights corresponding to the introductory lectures, midterm (January), and final (May) are held. Additional topics of interest not covered during the course will be explored during monthly podcasts with speakers.

The Transplant Education Program is a partnership Between New York Medical College and Westchester Medical Center’s Department of Surgery. Our mission is to support the organ procurement team in the retrieval and transportation of life-saving organs for transplantation and gain hands-on clinical experience in anatomical and surgical techniques, as well as ethical and logistical considerations. Through this educational program, we aim to equip students with the knowledge necessary to navigate the medical, ethical and legal complexities surrounding organ donation and become powerful advocates for organ transplantation in our future medical practices. Planned activities include accompanying surgical fellows in the retrieval of solid organs for transplantation, didactic learning and a monthly journal club.

Women in Medicine builds solidarity and community amongst the women of NYMC by creating safe spaces to share and reflect on the experiences of women, learn how to cope with adversities faced by women in the medical profession and provide support to medical students who are mothers, pregnant or family planning during their medical training. Events have included a family planning panel for students to learn about having children during their medical careers featuring a diverse panel of specialists, a workshop on how to handle gender bias, in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, a Mothers Support Group for student mothers and “coffee chats” between pre-clinical and clinical students to seek mentorship and advice about board studying, clerkship scheduling and residency applications.

Women in Sports Medicine seeks to engage medical students in a specialty where women represent a minority (~36% in sports medicine and 6% in orthopedic surgery) and expose them to opportunities within the field, with the goal of forming connections with female leaders in primary care sports medicine and orthopedic surgery to promote mentorship and learn from their experiences. Events have included guest speakers in sports medicine, including the New York Mets head team physician.

Doctor of Physical Therapy Club gives students at NYMC the opportunity to discover various aspects of Physical Therapy as a career and connect them with current and former DPT students in the area. We aim to serve the community, support the physical therapy profession, and provide a social atmosphere for its members to interact with other future health care professionals. Our final goal is to work closely with the DPT Students and professors at NYMC to implement ways to further excel the program.

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences fosters a welcoming and supportive environment for students through a variety of social events and informational sessions, with the goal of helping students achieve academic success, while also giving back to the local community. The GSA hosts multiple events throughout the year, including an annual 5K to raise money for Feeding Westchester, a local food pantry, during the fall semester and the annual Graduate Student Research Forum (GSRF) in the spring semester to showcase graduate student research.

The House of Representatives facilitates engagement activities between students in their respective Houses with an emphasis on interclass relationship development to provide a formalized social support network and promotion of micro-communities. Some activities run through the House of Representatives include Student Celebration Day, the House Olympics, the M1-M2 Peer Mentoring Program and Community Service Day. Each House Rep is expected to organize and host at least one house event per semester.

The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) empowers and supports students in the communication science disorder field. NSSLHA holds monthly meetings and activities to encourage professional development and raise awareness on issues related to the field. NSSLHA participates in various small and large activities, such as writing letters to patients at Mary Knoll for Valentine’s Day, participating in wellness fairs and providing hearing and speech screenings.

The Peer-to-Peer Committee helps students learn and embody the ideals of professionalism in various situations they will likely encounter throughout their four years of medical school and provide an outlet for students and faculty to handle issues related to professional conduct. In addition, every semester, students are asked to nominate their peers for the Professionals of NYMC Award, which is an honor that students carry with them as they apply for residency. Events held throughout the year focus on education and celebration, including Coffee Chats, where coffee and snacks are provided to students studying in the library.

The goal of Student Healthcare Executives (StuHE) is to prepare future public health leaders by educating them on the cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic factors that impact health and disease. StuHE also aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to preserve, protect and improve the health of individuals, families and communities through education, investigations, practice and service. Periodic events are also planned, such as the Connect and Mentor Series.

The United Nations Association (UNA) NYMC Chapter engages with the UNA at the local, state and national levels. Students are encouraged to be active in UNA through special interest groups, direct membership with UNA-NYC, UNA internship opportunities, national competitions, county and state meetings and national UNA conferences and events.

The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association NYMC chapter promotes issues in the field of medical education, explores unique challenges, obstacles and responsibilities specific to Asian Pacific American medical students and physicians, provides opportunities for students to give back to the community and represents Asian Pacific American students as a group within the healthcare community at NYMC. Activities and events have included group boba runs, game nights, AAPI Trivia Night, fundraising for the AAPI community through Pockygrams and the annual Lunar New Year Party.

The Canadians at NYMC Student Support Group provides information and support for incoming and current Canadian students int the School of Medicine. The support group addresses students' concerns about visas, studying in the United States and all the other hidden challenges that come with being an international student. Activities and events have included a panel with Canadian M4s who matched into residency (U.S. or Canada), answering FAQs from incoming students, providing a documentation checklist for first-year medical students, an information session about work and immigration visas in residency, a Canada Day celebration and a Canadian Thanksgiving celebration. Monthly meetings, workshops and information sessions are held via Zoom.Social events are expected to be in-person on-campus, following appropriate COVID-19 protocols. If appropriate, social events may take place at nearby off-campus recreational locations.

The CDMA chapter at NYMC and Touro College of Dental Medicine provides a space for those interested in learning more about the Bible and the story of redemption therein culminating in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Activities include regular weekly Bible studies and weekly prayer meetings and other events on- and off-campus, including hikes, dinners, apple picking, bowling, as well as volunteering together in the surrounding communities. Meetings are held weekly for Bible study and to spend time together, as well as Sunday evenings to pray together.

The Jewish Students' Association, colloquially known as the Shtetl, serves as an official club for the Jewish students of NYMC. With the goal of engendering a feeling of union and community among all Jewish students, regardless of their program, the Shtetl works closely with the administration to host regular events open to the entire NYMC community and to further appreciation and understanding of Jewish culture. The Shtetl is most known for being responsible for Shabbatonim approximately once a month when everyone at NYMC is invited to partake in a catered Friday night meal. The Shtetl also hosts holiday-themed events, such as a Purim/Chanukah party, biur chametz party and Torah classes throughout the year.

The LMSA Chapter at NYMC, which is affiliated with the Northeast Region LMSA and National LMSA, promotes and celebrates diversity by representing Hispanic/Latinx medical students in the school community and by educating the community on healthcare issues, sociocultural barriers and other challenges faced by Hispanic/Latinx patient populations across the country. The organization also provides mentorship and a sense of community among underrepresented medical students, in addition to promoting skills and values relating to cultural competency in the healthcare setting. LMSA kicks off the year with a meet-and-greet event hosted in conjunction with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). After the first round of exams, LMSA hosts an annual barbecue with SNMA, a great opportunity for returning members to meet new members and socialize with fellow students on campus. Other events have included a Paint and Sip Night, where students painted Bob Ross-style paintings while enjoying Latino food and relaxing after class.

The goal of the Medical Spanish Club is to promote the importance of the Spanish language in the healthcare setting. We aim to provide an opportunity for students to both learn medical Spanish and practice their communication skills so that they may be better equipped to provide quality care to future Spanish-speaking patients. We are open to all students, regardless of proficiency level! Our club hosts general meetings roughly once a month, during which students can enhance their medical Spanish vocabulary through engaging activities such as trivia games, conversational exercises, and more.

The Muslim Student Association, known as the MSA, was formed to create a space for Muslim students at NYMC to have a community of people they feel close to outside of their goals in medicine. Activities include Jummah prayer at the mosque in Westchester Medical Center, Ramadan Iftar, Eid celebrations and networking events with the American Muslim Medical Student Association (AMMSA). Through the AMMSA, students are able to network with physicians, surgeons and medical students across the country. Events include weekly Halaqahs, MSA Chai & Chat, and a formal gala to meet Muslim students from the tristate area. At NYMC, Muslim students and friends are able to connect with one another to help create a better understanding of what it means to be a Muslim student in the field of medicine.

The South Asian Medical Student Association broadens the understanding of South Asian culture and creates a strong community for fellow South Asian students to cultivate a feeling of home away from home. Activities are planned around major South Asian holidays. Recent events included a Diwali celebration with catering by a local Indian restaurant. Future plans include Bollywood movie showings and activities surrounding South Asian culture to further expand knowledge about the culture while also providing a great study break for the student body.

The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) NYMC Chapter is committed to supporting and addressing the health needs of underrepresented communities and communities of color and increasing the number of clinically excellent, clinically competent and socially conscious physicians. In addition, SNMA is dedicated both to ensuring that medical education and services are culturally sensitive to the needs of diverse populations and to increasing the number of Black, Latino and other students of color entering and completing medical school. Events have included a Juneteenth movie screening and discussion, implicit bias training for M1s, a Breast Cancer Walk with the American Cancer Society, and a Black Men in White Coats documentary screening and panel discussion.

The NYMC Center for Human Rights is a student-run clinic that works closely with various human rights organizations in the Westchester County region to aid asylum seekers in their legal journey for safety in the United States. Activities include conducting psychological and medical evaluations for asylum seekers and sex- and labor-trafficked victims in Westchester County, as well as planning events addressing human rights issues in the community through outreach and collaboration with local organizations, community health centers and clinical care networks. A majority of the group’s members have completed online training and are eligible to scribe medical evaluations for providers, which are offered on a rolling basis as evaluation requests come into the clinic. Please note scribing is available to medical students in the SOM only.

Donate for Life coordinates with the New York Blood Center to organize bi-monthly blood drives at the NYMC campus to facilitate more life-saving blood donations for the surrounding communities.

La Casita supports the health of the underserved community in Westchester. With the goal of leaving Westchester better than when they arrived, students in La Casita connect with local community organizations to collectively support underserved populations. The group also hosts community events and fundraisers aimed at improving health screenings and resources.

Sexual Assault Abuse and Victims Empowerment Program (SAAVE) at NYMC serves as a liaison between medical students at NYMC and the SAAVE program at Westchester Medical Center (WMC). SAAVE at WMC offers immediate crisis intervention to rape, sexual assault and domestic violence survivors in the emergency room or via a 24/7 hotline. In addition, the SAAVE program offers follow-up psychotherapy and counseling initiatives and works to eradicate sexual violence through education and outreach. SAAVE holds educational events throughout the year and coordinates student volunteers at WMC. As a volunteer, students can work shifts on a 24/7 hotline or in person at the WMC Emergency Department. Educational talks occur every other month, while volunteering happens weekly.

The Arrhythmias is the premier a cappella group at NYMC. Founded in 1993, the group is comprised of talented medical students who are passionate about music and performing a cappella style in a variety of genres. The Arrhythmias perform at numerous events throughout the year, including commencement, alumni reunions and various charitable performances and offer a fun and supportive community welcoming to all levels of skill and experience.

The Basketball Club provides NYMC and Touro College of Dental Medicine students with opportunities to engage in friendly competition through the sport of basketball. Basketball Club organizes an Outdoor 3-on-3 Basketball League and a Winter Indoor 5-on-5 Basketball League. Both events are open to students from any school within NYMC and Touro College of Dental Medicine. Members of the NYMC Basketball Club meet on a weekly basis to participate in games. During scheduled basketball leagues, teams play multiple times a week for a span of two to three months.

Book Club creates a space for students to talk about and build community around literature. We vote on upcoming books at each meeting and meet monthly to discuss the books together in the format of a roundtable discussion. We will provide some discussion questions if needed, but ideally the meeting will be an open flow of conversation for around an hour and a half or so. The books will be fiction or nonfiction and can be of poem or essay format as well, but ideally would not have to do with medical writing so the club can act as a de-stressor space from studying.

The Chess Club provides an environment for students to play and explore the game of chess, which is a quick game to learn and rewarding as you learn more strategies and tactics. Meetings, which are held monthly, are for casual chess play, culminating with a tournament at the end of the school year.

Climbing Club is for people of any skill level interested in rock climbing, ranging from beginners who have never climbed before to those who have climbed for many years. The club aims to make climbing more accessible to anyone interested and to provide students with a fun outlet for exercise and the management of stress, whether that be bouldering, top-roping or lead climbing. The club rock climbs indoors at The Cliffs at Valhalla regularly. Previously, the club organized a trip to climb the Shawangunk Mountains. Several NYMC students participated in a climbing competition this past February at The Cliffs. The club meets periodically to climb, but as the schedules of varying classes often have conflicting availability depending on exam timing, a group chat helps club members organize smaller meetups or find a belay partner at times most convenient for them to climb.

The Cricket Club fosters a community of individuals that enjoys watching, playing, discussing or simply learning about the sport of cricket. As the second-most watched sport in the world after soccer, club members work to raise awareness of the sport and promote health and well-being for the student body. A popular activity is the annual World Cup "viewing party" where students enjoy watching the tournament together on the projector screens while enjoying refreshments.

NYMC Cycling is a club for cyclists of all skill levels from beginners to people who race regularly with the goal of making cycling more accessible to all members of the campus community by connecting people with similar interests to ride together. Chiefly a road cycling club, members also include those interested in gravel, mountain biking and cyclocross. The club hosts events a few times each semester and offers bike rentals through a local bike shop for those who do not have bikes on campus. Members also participate in races in and around Westchester County.

The Endurance Training Club serves as a community that harbors goal-driven physical training, encouragement, motivation and nutritional support for students ranging from seasoned endurance athletes to those looking to get involved in training for their own enjoyment or first race. The club’s mission is to promote physical well-being with an emphasis on community cohesiveness by connecting students across the graduate, medical and dental schools and collaborative partnerships with various student organizations. The club collaborates with the Running Club and Cycling Club to host training sessions several times per month. Support is also provided for those interested in longer training sessions encourage students to share races which they would like to attend and advocate.

Medical Musicians fosters a sense of community at NYMC by providing a structured setting where people can safely enjoy live and pre-recorded music, as well as other creative outlets. People from all backgrounds are welcome to join and participate in music activities according to their choice and level of comfort. Medical Musicians hosts and organizes several music events throughout the year. The most frequently attended events are bi-weekly Jam Sessions where students bring their instruments, voices or just positive energy to create and enjoy live music, practice for performances or take a musical break from studying. The club also host popular yearly performances and concerts, such as Open Mic Night, the Swooney Toons Concert and the Behavioral Health Center concert, where the group performs for patients at Westchester Medical Center. The Pickleball Club provides a welcoming and inclusive environment where students can come together to learn, play and enjoy this fantastic sport. Activities include regular practice sessions, friendly matches, mini-tournaments and social events suitable for all skill levels.

The Running Club fosters a community of students of all athletic abilities with a shared interest in running. Participation in the club is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and get outside! Running Club meets for weekend group runs, usually on the North County Trail, and participates in races in the area, such as the Sleepy Hollow 10k and Half Marathon.

The Soccer Club fosters students’ passion for soccer and community outreach. Players of all skill levels are welcome to join in weekly soccer games on campus that involve students from the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Health Sciences and Practice and the Touro College of Dental Medicine. Tournaments are also planned during the year.

The Spike Ball Club promotes spike ball, a two vs. two game played on a net outside, and emphasizes the physical and mental health benefits that come with playing sports, fostering both a close-knit community and having fun!

The Tennis Club fosters a shared interest in tennis among students through education, volunteering at community service events, such as Aceing Autism, and by just providing students opportunities to meet, compete and have some fun through weekly tennis games.

Volleyball Club fosters a supportive and inclusive community where individuals of all skill levels can come together to enjoy and improve their volleyball abilities. Through dedicated practice, teamwork, and friendly competition, we aim to promote physical fitness, personal growth, and a strong sense of camaraderie among our members. Some of our activities include non-competitive outdoor play, tournaments, beach volleyball, and skill workshops. Depending on the weather, the volleyball club generally meets 1-3x a week.

The Weightlifting and Health Club advances and maximizes the health, safety and wellness of NYMC students through evidence-based weightlifting practices regardless of experience level with the goal of nurturing positivity, growth, self-improvement and self-love. Group workouts are held on campus and at local gyms, as well as group sessions at NYMC-sponsored yoga classes.
