17th Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio Research Day to Take Place Virtually on December 16
The 17th Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio Research Day will be presented virtually on December 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
The event will feature keynote speaker Julie Ann Sosa, M.D., M.A., FACS, MAMSE, FSSO, the Leon Goldman M.D., Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), who will present "Asking the Right Questions: How Research Can Impact Practice."
Dr. Sosa is also professor in the Department of Medicine and affiliated faculty for the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF. An NIH-funded investigator, her clinical interest is in endocrine surgery with a focus in thyroid cancer. She has authored or edited seven books and is an author of more than 330 peer-reviewed publications and 80 book chapters and reviews, all largely focused on outcomes research, health care delivery, hyperparathyroidism and thyroid cancer—with a focus on clinical trials.
Dr. Sosa serves as treasurer of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) and serves on the Board of Directors/Executive Council of the ATA and International Thyroid Oncology Group, as well as practice guidelines committees for the ATA, National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons.
At the ATA, Dr. Sosa chairs the committee responsible for writing the next iteration of differentiated thyroid cancer guidelines. She is the editor-in-chief of the World Journal of Surgery and is an editor of Greenfield’s Surgery: Scientific Principles and Practice. She was inducted as a full member to the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Educators in 2020 and received the Lewis E. Braverman Distinguished Lectureship Award from the ATA in 2017.
Dr. Sosa received an A.B. from Princeton University, an M.A. from the University of Oxford and an M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she completed the Halsted residency in surgery, followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology.
