NYMC Hosts Successful MSCHE Virtual Site Visit
The New York Medical College (NYMC) Community Welcomed the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Accreditation Team of Peer Evaluators For A Four-Day Virtual Visit April 11-14
During the visit, they met with Self-Study working groups comprised of students, faculty, staff and senior leadership. Their task was to clarify and verify the information and data provided in the more than 100-page NYMC Self-Study Report as well as in the Evidence Inventory documents. At the conclusion of the visit, Chair of the MSCHE Visitor Team, Bruce Jarrell, M.D., FACS, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, gave a preliminary oral report that was live-streamed to the NYMC community.
Dr. Jarell’s oral report indicated that NYMC fully meets the MSCHE Accreditation Standards, Requirements of Affiliation and Federal Regulations consistent with the NYMC mission and vision. The MSCHE Team also had commendations for NYMC in a number of areas including:
- The leadership of the NYMC co-chairs in the MSCHE re-accreditation process;
- The inclusive process for the development of the campus mission and vision statement;
- The Academy of Educators program;
- The campus response to COVID-19;
- The College’s overall Diversity and Inclusion program;
- The growth in the percentage of students underrepresented in medicine enrolled in the School of Medicine. The site visit team called this a “model for other institutions;”
- The association of New York Medical College with the Touro College and University System; and
- The long-term academic affiliation agreement with Westchester Medical Health Network.
The MSCHE chair oral report also included collegial suggestions for NYMC to consider and one recommendation to be addressed administratively.
“I am so proud of the College community for the work that we have done together at all levels to listen to one another, share goals and processes and identify areas for improvement, as well as implement strategies to drive continuous quality improvements. Many of the recommendations that were identified in our MSCHE Self-Study were also included in the NYMC 2021-26 Strategic Plan, showing the dedication of the College community to achieve the goals and objectives identified in the Self-Study process,” said Dana G. Mordue, Ph.D., vice chancellor of MSCHE accreditation and associate professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology. “I look forward to continuing our work together to achieve excellence in the pursuit of NYMC’s mission and vision.”
“The positive results of the MSCHE team reflect the dedication, planning, collaboration and commitment to excellence, by the NYMC community. We clearly presented our ability to seek innovative ways to support our mission to educate tomorrow’s health care professionals, scientists, advocates and leaders, in an ever-changing environment,” said Jennifer Riekert, M.B.A., vice president of communications and strategic initiatives and co-chair of MSCHE accreditation. “We can all take pride in this achievement.”
Dr. Jarrell is scheduled to present his brief on NYMC as part of the MSCHE commission meeting on June 7, 2021 and the College will be notified of the commission's decision by the end of June 2021.
