NYMC Welcomes First-Year Students to SHSP
Incoming SHSP Students Head Full Swing into the New Academic Year
New York Medical College (NYMC) recently welcomed more than 150 first-year students to the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP). Students who are beginning their education in public health, physical therapy, speech-language pathology (SLP), participated in orientation sessions covering health services, student support, professionalism, upcoming courses, managing bias in health care, and financial planning.
“It’s great to meet new faces, and to know that we have faculty here that care and are dedicated professionals,” said Adrian Mieles, D.P.T. Class of 2027. “I feel at home.”
Abigail Obeng-Ayirebi, M.P.H. Class of 2026, says the College was the right fit for her after attending orientation. “I appreciate the small, close-knit community at NYMC and the abundant clinical opportunities at NYC hospitals available after graduation,” she said. “I also value the school's nurturing environment that promotes personal growth and career advancement without being overly competitive”.
“When I first came to campus, I was a bit nervous, but after meeting my mentor and a few of my peers, I found everyone to be so nice and welcoming. I’m looking forward to working in a group setting in labs and clinicals,” said Stephanie Cabrera, SLP Class of 2026.
Students were also able to participate in social activities, including a three-week boot camp for SLP, and a luncheon filled with food and outdoor games for physical therapy students. As classes are back in full swing, students had the opportunity to get further acquainted at the SHSP barbecue on September 16.
