Students from the Summer Leadership Medical Pathways Program at White Plains Youth Bureau gained an inside look at the medical graduate student experience during their visit to New York Medical College (NYMC) earlier this summer. The program offers local ninth and tenth grade students from underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to learn about careers in health care.

During the summer, 15 students visited with NYMC faculty including Janet Dolot, M.S., D.P.T., Dr.P.H. '14, PT, OCS, division chief and associate professor of physical therapy; Katherine Paulino-Gomez,M.A., CCC-SLP, TSSLD-BE assistant professor of speech-language pathology; and Stefanie Blanco, SLP.D, M.S. ’10, CCC-SLP, TSSLD, assistant professor of speech-language pathology, to learn more about the programs offered at NYMC, as well as participate in an interactive class with current NYMC students.

White Plains Youth Bureau serves youth ages five through 24, offering educational and professional development opportunities. Their mission is to raise awareness among their members about careers in medicine and health professions, with a particular focus on underrepresented groups in medicine.

Frank Williams, director of the White Plains Youth Bureau, founded the program with Amy Ansehl, DNP, RN, MSN, FNP- BC, senior associate dean of student experience and associate professor of public health.

“We encourage the students to seize the opportunity to take medical courses. Their time with NYMC gives them a robust opportunity to be engaged in this world,” says Williams. “NYMC is essential to the work that we do. They are cultivating and nurturing, and ready for the next generation of health care workers.”

The White Plains Youth Bureau visitors were grateful for the hands-on opportunities NYMC had to offer and enjoyed getting a better understanding of the endless possibilities for their future.
