Internationally Acclaimed Cardiologist Dr. Fuster Set to Address DelGuercio Day

Valentin Fuster, M.D., Ph.D., president of Mount Sinai Heart and physician-in-chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital, will give the keynote presentation at the 20th Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio, M.D., Distinguished Visiting Professorship and Research Day on Wednesday, May 24, at the Westchester Medical Center Taylor Conference Room. A preeminent leader in cardiovascular medicine, Dr. Fuster is also the general director of the National Center for Cardiovascular Research in Madrid, Spain. 

Dr. Fuster’s area of research covers the causes, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease globally, and spans the full range from hardcore basic science and molecular biology, through clinical studies and large-scale multinational trials, to population sciences and global medicine. 
 
He served as president of the American Heart Association, president of the World Heart Federation and member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, where he chaired the committee for the document on "Promotion of Cardiovascular Health Worldwide.” He presently co-chairs the advisory committee on “the Role of the United States on Global Health” as advisor to the president, is a member of the European Horizon 2020 Scientific Panel of Health, council member of the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and president of the Training Program of the American College of Cardiology. 
 
His research into the origin of cardiovascular events, which have contributed to improved treatment of heart attack patients, was recognized by the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, the highest international award of Spain, the Grand Prix Scientifique of the Institute of France for his translational research into atherothrombotic disease and the prestigious Prince Mahidol Award Laureate for his lifelong contribution in the field of medicine. In 2022, the American College of Cardiology instituted the Valentin Fuster Award in Science and Innovation for the next 15 years. 
 
Dr. Fuster is the only cardiologist to have received the highest awards for research from the four leading cardiovascular organizations: the American Heart Association (Gold Medal and Research Achievement Award), the American College of Cardiology (Living Legend and Life Achievement Award), the European Society of Cardiology (Gold Medal) and the Interamerican Society of Cardiology (Research Achievement Award). In 2014, King Juan Carlos I of Spain granted Dr. Fuster with the title of Marquis for his "outstanding and unceasing research efforts and his educational outreach work."
