The New York Iota chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the national medical honor society, hosted its annual visiting professor lecture, banquet and induction ceremony on April 25 at 19 Skyline Drive. D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., left, dean of the School of Medicine, and William H. Frishman, M.D., the Barbara and William Rosenthal Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, professor of pharmacology and councilor of the Iota chapter, welcomed keynote speaker Kimberly Manning, M.D., associate professor of medicine, director, Distinction in Teaching and Leadership at the Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Manning, who plays a key role in the education of medical students, residents and faculty at Emory, presented “The Patient as Our Teacher: Timeless Lessons and Teachable Moments,” recounting encounters with patients who taught her valuable lessons not learned from a textbook or classroom. An avid writer, Dr. Manning’s academic interests include humanism in medicine, medical professionalism and patient-doctor communication skills, regularly contributing reflective writing pieces to high impact journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Annals of Internal Medicine and Academic Medicine.
This year’s inductees into Alpha Omega Alpha included alumni members Lois Brustman, M.D. ’79, professor of obstetrics gynecology and reproductive science, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; Mill Etienne, M.D. ’02, M.P.H., clinical assistant professor of neurology and advisory house dean, NYMC; and Kenneth Sutin, M.D. ’87, clinical professor of anesthesiology, New York University School of Medicine. Randy A. Goldberg, M.D. ’97, M.P.H. ’13, assistant professor of medicine, NYMC; Susan C. Olson, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, NYMC; and Philip J. Overby, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics, NYMC, were inducted as faculty members.
The 2017 AOA Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award was presented to George V. Tsimoyianis, M.D., clinical assistant professor of pediatrics, NYMC, and the 2017 AOA Administrative Award was presented to Barbara Donnadio, AOA New York Iota Chapter coordinator and TAP secretary and executive administrative assistant at NYMC.
