Donate Life Club Breaks Blood Donation Record for Academic Year
The Club Capped Off Their Successful Year By Surpassing Their Goal of 200 Blood Donations With One Drive to Spare
The New York Medical College (NYMC) Donate Life Club broke the record for blood donations in an academic year on April 7, surpassing 200 donations for the first time. The club has seen tremendous turnouts for each of their drives during the 2021-2022 academic year, all of which came during a time of great need for blood in New York State.
Prior to the April 7 drive, the club was only a few blood donations away from their goal of 200. Much like the previous drives throughout the year, students were queued up in the Willner Atrium Lobby in the Medical Education Center to generously donate, as the club received an additional 41 donations, bringing the year’s total to 235. The donated blood will directly impact about 99 patients in local area hospitals, according to Sarah Solomon, School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2024 and co-president of Donate Life Club.
“Although my pride in our community increases with every successful blood drive, this previous one in particular was even more special as the students and staff helped us break 200 donations,” Ms. Solomon said.
Although Ms. Solomon and the rest of the Donate Life Club are proud that they reached and surpassed their goal, they already have their sights set on a more ambitious goal—300 total donations. “Our community never ceases to amaze me with their generosity,” she said.
The drives—done in partnership with New York Blood Center—have played a crucial role in addressing the blood shortage in New York all year, as they collect red blood cells, platelets and plasma to patients in need.
The club hopes to hit 300 total donations during their last blood drive of the year scheduled for June 2.
