Graduate Student Association Welcomes New Slate of Officers and Looks Forward to Event-Filled Year
The GSA Will Be Hosting Various Activities To Encourage Participation And Peer Connections
The Graduate Student Association (GSA) in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBMS) welcomed its new officers for the 2022-2023 academic year. They are looking forward to connecting with group members through various events such as a 5K event in partnership with Feeding Westchester and a big-little reveal to facilitate mentorship and communication within the GSA. Sabrina Martinez, center, M.S. Class of 2023, and president of the GSA, provided insight into what the year has in store for the GSA.
What are the goals of the GSA this year?
This year, the GSA’s goal is to provide students with opportunities to connect with their peers and develop community-building skills. Since circumstances have changed from the beginning of the pandemic, we plan to take advantage of having more in-person community service and volunteer events as well as social events for students to create a solid and prosperous community.
Are there plans for any major events in the near future?
We will raise money for Feeding Westchester, an organization that provides food for those in need, through a 5K event from November 3-10. This event will be hosted virtually that week so students can participate with friends no matter where they are. GSA also plans to match first-year students with second-year mentors during our Big-Little event in early to mid-October. At this in-person event, the mentees can socialize with their mentors, discuss ways to navigate through the first year and have the chance to get to know one another personally.
Is there anything you'd like students who may want to participate to know about the GSA?
The GSA is a welcoming community, and we encourage all students to participate in our events. Whether students come with a few friends or alone, they will most certainly enjoy meeting our other classmates and colleagues. Additionally, our ambassador positions allow students to be directly involved with creating, hosting and managing events. We will be hosting most of our events in-person as the COVID-19 guidelines allow. At our most recent club fair event, incoming students met members of our e-board, who are very talented, responsible and open-minded individuals. I am glad to work with them and our ambassadors this year.
