NYMC Receives $900,000 HECap Award
The NYS Grant Will Support the Center for Disaster Medicine and Physical Therapy Clinical Skills Facility
New York Medical College (NYMC) has been awarded $900,000 from New York State for the expansion and improvement of the Center for Disaster Medicine (CDM) at 7 Dana Road and the Physical Therapy Clinical Skills Facility in the School of Health Sciences and Practice. The funding comes from the Higher Education Capital (HECap) Matching Grant Program and is awarded by the HECap Board, which provides matching grants to private, not-for-profit colleges and universities for projects that create construction jobs and drive investment in communities across the state.
NYMC was one of 33 colleges and universities in New York to receive the grant that supports projects that provide construction and renovation of new laboratory and research spaces, the purchase of new instructional technologies and equipment, and many other significant investments. Campuses that receive grants are required to invest at least $3 of their own funds for every $1 of state funds received.
The HECap funding combined with the already awarded HRSA grant and NYMC funds will support a multi-phase project, which includes the new Simulation and Educational Facility under development in the CDM and improvement to the Physical Therapy Clinical Skills Facility to better serve the community. The award will allow the College to partner with regional allied health programs to enhance co-institutional programmatic offerings and promote interprofessional training opportunities.
"We are honored to have received this New York State HeCAP award which will allow the Center to further expand our educational offerings to support the first responders, health care professionals, educational professionals, law enforcement, governmental leaders in the Hudson Valley and all of New York State to provide more effective clinical care, respond to mass casualty incidents and prepare for disasters, terrorism and public health emergencies," said David Markenson, M.D., M.B.A., director of the CDM and senior associate dean for research, who is the principal investigator for the award.
"With this funding, my administration is reaffirming our commitment to providing our students – including those at our private, not-for-profit institutions – with a top-tier, New York education with the best possible resources and facilities that will help them succeed inside and outside of the classroom," said Governor Kathy Hochul in a press release.
