NYMC Set to Commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 7
This year's keynote is "Hitler and Hippocrates: Medicine During the Third Reich"
The New York Medical College (NYMC) community will gather virtually to commemorate Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, on Wednesday, April 7, at noon via Zoom. The event will feature keynote speaker, Tessa Chelouche, M.D., a family physician in Israel and renowned scholar of medical history, who will present "Hitler and Hippocrates: Medicine during the Third Reich." Dr. Chelouche is a lecturer on medicine and the Holocaust as part of the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion Institute in Haifa, Israel, and is the co-chair of the Department of Bioethics and the Holocaust as well as the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair in Bioethics at Haifa. She also serves as co-director of the Maimonides Institute for Medicine, Ethics and the Holocaust.
Dr. Chelouche has published numerous articles on medicine and the Holocaust and is the co-editor of the Casebook on Bioethics and the Holocaust," which has been translated into six languages and is used at numerous academic medical educational institutions worldwide.
This year’s Yom Hashoah observance presented by the Health Sciences Library will also include remarks by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer; Rabbi Moshe D. Krupka, M.S., executive vice president, Touro College and University System; Marie T. Ascher, M.S., M.P.H., the Lillian Hetrick Huber Endowed Director, Health Sciences Library; Anne Bayefsky, M.A., L.L.B., director, Touro Institute on Human Rights and the Holocaust; Stacy Gallin, D.M.H., founding director, Maimonides Institute for Medicine, Ethics and the Holocaust, visiting assistant professor, Medical Ethics Program at NYMC, and co-chair, Department of Bioethics and the Holocaust, UNESCO Chair of Bioethics at Haifa.
