Humayun Islam, M.D., Ph.D., is Named Interim Chair of the Department of Pathology
Humayun Islam, M.D., Ph.D., clinical professor of pathology, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Pathology, effective September 1.
He has also been appointed interim director of the Department of Pathology at Westchester Medical Center (WMC). Dr. Islam has been an active member of the New York Medical College (NYMC) community since 2005, serving as the residency program director for the Department of Pathology, a member of the NYMC Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects Oncology Panel, a member of the Graduate Medical Education Executive Committee, as well as an advisor, educator and mentor to students. Dr. Islam most recently served as chief of anatomic pathology and medical director for hematopathology.
Dr. Islam is a recognized leader in his field both nationally and internationally. He is currently the chair of the New York State Delegation of the College of American Pathologists and vice president of the New York State Society of Pathologists. He is the author of several peer-reviewed articles representing the collaborative work of the Department of Pathology as well as other departments at NYMC and WMC. Dr. Islam has been named as a top pathologist by the New York Top Doctor Patient Review.
“It’s an exciting time to be in the field of pathology with the burgeoning of personalized and precision medicine. I’d like to focus on collaborative projects and advance the College’s bench-to-bedside research in order to provide state-of-the-art diagnostics, prognostics and patient care,” said Dr. Islam.
Dr. Islam received his training at Dhaka Medical College and completed his residency in NYMC's Department of Pathology at WMC, where he also served as chief resident. He completed a fellowship in hematopathology at New York University Medical Center. He succeeds John T. Fallon III, M.D., Ph.D., who served as chair of the Department of Pathology since 2009.
