
Ivor S. Douglas, M.D., to Lead Department of Medicine
A Renowned Leader in Pulmonary and Critical Care, Dr. Douglas Will Assume the Role as the Barbara and William Rosenthal Chair of Medicine in June

Ivor S. Douglas, M.D., has been appointed as the Barbara and William Rosenthal Chair of the Department of Medicine at New York Medical College (NYMC) and Director of the Department of Medicine at Westchester Medical Center (WMC). He will assume his new role in June. An internationally renowned critical care specialist, Dr. Douglas currently serves as professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, and chief of pulmonary and critical medicine at Denver Health Medical Center, where he has also directed the Medical Intensive Care Unit since 2002.

Schluger, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine at NYMC. “His extensive experience in pulmonary and critical care medicine, combined with his passion for mentoring the next generation of physicians, will undoubtedly elevate the Department of Medicine at NYMC and enhance the care provided at WMC.”
Dr. Douglas is a National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Defense, and industry-funded principal investigator for ongoing research in several aspects of clinical critical care, including basic mechanistic studies in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis and septic shock, and therapeutic strategies for shock resuscitation and long-term outcomes in the critically ill. He serves on the steering committees and safety monitoring boards for multicenter international studies in critical illness. His work in critical care leadership and health services includes sepsis resuscitation programs using Lean systems engineering techniques.
He has authored more than 190 articles and chapters, and his research has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, among other leading journals. He is the co-editor of Principles of Critical Care, currently in its fifth edition, the preeminent textbook in the field.
Dr. Douglas has served as chair of the American Thoracic Society’s (ATS) Critical Care Assembly Program Committee, chair of the ATS Healthcare Policy Committee, and on the board of the Colorado Foundation for Medical Care.
He has received teaching awards at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and University of Colorado and has been recognized annually since 2008 in Denver 5280’s “Top Doc” and “Best Doctors in America” lists. Dr. Douglas is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians.
Board-certified in pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine, Dr. Douglas earned his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa and completed a residency in internal medicine at the King’s College Hospital and St. Thomas Hospital in London, before immigrating to the U.S. He subsequently completed a pulmonary and critical care fellowship training at the University of Chicago and served on the faculty at Columbia University /New York Presbyterian Hospital before moving to Colorado in 2002.
