Dr. Valentin Will Oversee New York Medical College’s More Than 25 Graduate Medical Education Programs

LaShari Valentin, Ph.D., M.B.A., has been named the designated institutional official (DIO) and dean of graduate medical education (GME) at New York Medical College (NYMC). In her new role, Dr. Valentin will maintain the institutional graduate medical education accreditation of the NYMC School of Medicine (SOM) by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as well as the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), which includes overseeing more than 25 ACGME-accredited GME programs sponsored by the SOM and two CODA-accredited graduate dental programs.
Dr. Valentin will continue in her current roles as associate vice chancellor of external academic relations for NYMC and associate dean for academic affiliations and clinical programs in the SOM.
“We are thrilled that Dr. Valentin is expanding her leadership role at NYMC as our new DIO,” said Neil W. Schluger, M.D., dean of the SOM. “Having already been a valued member of our community, Dr. Valentin brings a deep understanding of our institution and a strong commitment to medical education. I am confident that her experience and dedication will further strengthen our graduate medical education programs and enhance the training of our future physicians.”
An accomplished medical education professional with a robust background in health sciences and business administration, Dr. Valentin joined NYMC in 2022 as assistant dean for academic affiliations and clinical programs. Previously, she served as the director of postgraduate medical education at Montefiore Medical Center, as well as in similar roles at Hackensack Meridian Health and Mount Sinai Medical Center. In these positions, she oversaw graduate medical education compliance to meet accreditation standards and directed a wide range of programmatic issues, including long-range planning and ACGME program applications.
Dr. Valentin is an active member of several professional associations, including the American College of Healthcare Executives and the National Association of Health Services Executives. She received her Ph.D. in health sciences from Seton Hall University and her M.B.A. from Metropolitan College of New York. Dr. Valentin’s doctoral dissertation at Seton Hall University focused on investigating decision-making practices among U.S. graduate medical education program directors in selecting residency applicants. She has also co-authored publications, including the longitudinal review “Rate My Attending,” assessing residents’ perceptions of educational experiences.
