Three New York Medical College (NYMC) faculty members were among 12 “2022 Healthcare Heroes” selected by Westchester Magazine for their valiant and dedicated efforts to health care in Westchester and beyond. Lori Solomon, M.D. ’99, M.P.H. ’09, right sitting, Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., third from right standing, and Gregory R. Veillette, M.D., were honored during the Ninth Annual Healthcare Heroes luncheon on May 12, where they were celebrated for their vital work.
Drs. Solomon, Amar and Veillette were all highlighted in the May 2022 issue of Westchester Magazine along with the other awardees, sharing insight into what drove them to go above and beyond.
Dr. Solomon, clinical associate professor and chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine and director of the Family Health Center, was praised for her unwavering commitment to the Center, where she treated patients during heightened waves of COVID-19—sometimes working at the Center all by herself. Her efforts were invaluable in attaining COVID-19 vaccines once they were approved by the federal government and she even personally delivered surplus vaccine doses to vaccination clinics that were in need of them.
Dr. Amar, who is vice president for research and professor of pharmacology and of pathology, microbiology and immunology at NYMC, senior vice president for research affairs at Touro University, and professor of dental medicine at Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC, was lauded for his research that links oral health to systemic inflammation and his work in the trial process for COVID-19 treatments with Regeneron. Dr. Amar was essential in helping expedite approval processes, and the trials laid the foundation for use of monoclonal antibodies as a treatment for COVID-19.
Gregory R. Veillette, M.D, assistant professor of surgery and section chief of surgical oncology and hepatopancreatobiliary (HBP) surgery at Westchester Medical Center, has established himself as an expert in HBP procedures, which are operations on the liver, pancreas or bile ducts to help treat cancer and other diseases. Dr. Veillette was also highlighted for his ability to perform a pancreaticoduodenectomy, or “Whipple” procedure—an operation to remove the head of the pancreas, part of the small intestine, the gallbladder and the bile duct.
