NYMC Set to Host Golf Tournament and Reception on June 28
Event will Pay Tribute to Longtime Faculty Member and Alumnus Leonard J. Newman, M.D. '70, Professor and Chair of Pediatrics
New York Medical College (NYMC) will host its 2021 Golf Tournament and Reception on Monday, June 28 at the oldest golf club in the United States, Saint Andrew's Golf Club, founded in 1888 in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. The event will honor Leonard J. Newman, M.D. '70, professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics.
After registration and practice beginning at 11:30 a.m., a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start on the 18-hole golf course designed by golf course architects William H. Tucker and Harry Talmadge will kick off the day. Following play, a reception will pay tribute to Dr. Newman, a member of the NYMC community for more than five decades, who also serves as president of Boston Children's Health Physicians.
Specializing in pediatric gastroenterology, Dr. Newman is a highly respected physician, mentor and educator. After graduating from the NYMC School of Medicine in 1970, he completed a one-year internship at University Hospital of San Diego County, followed by a pediatrics residency at NYMC, serving as chief resident from 1972-1973. He completed a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and was recruited back to NYMC to set up a division of pediatric gastroenterology at the College.
In 1980, Dr. Newman led the effort to open the pediatric ICU at Westchester Medical Center (WMC), followed by a neonatal ICU two years later. In collaboration with faculty specialists from the pediatric divisions of pulmonology, neonatology, gastroenterology and endocrinology, Dr. Newman developed a pediatric referral service covering the seven-county region of the Hudson Valley, leading to the development of Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at WMC.
As chair of the Department of Pediatrics, a role he has held since 1992, he has expanded research funding, while serving on several committees including graduate medical education, tenure, appointments and promotions, and pediatrics internship selection, as well as being active in fundraising and serving on the NYMC Board of Advisors.
Dr. Leonard is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the honor medical society, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology. For his dedication and leadership, Dr. Newman was the 2005 NYMC SOM Alumni Association Medal of Honor recipient and an honoree at the WMC gala in 2012.
“We are excited to host this golf tournament for the first time in 16 years, especially as we honor Dr. Newman's incredible accomplishments over the years,” said Bess J. Chazhur, M.S., chief development officer and executive director of alumni relations. “It will be a great time for everyone to play and enjoy each other's company in a safe and gorgeous setting while raising funds for important student scholarships.”
Funds raised by the golf outing will be used to support student scholarships in the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences and School of Health Sciences and Practice.
The golf outing will adhere to COVID-19 precautions pursuant to New York State and CDC guidelines at the time.
