NYMC Hosts Fourth Annual HeLa Diversity and Inclusion Conference
The New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine's (SOM) Office of Diversity and Inclusion, in collaboration with Westchester Medical Center Health (WMCHealth) Network, hosted the fourth annual HeLa Diversity and Inclusion conference on March 18 in the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center.
This year’s conference, “The Evolution of Diversity and Inclusion in Healthcare: Today’s Challenges, Tomorrow’s Solutions,” welcomed 100 participants from the NYMC and WMCHealth communities as well as stakeholders from throughout Westchester County. Panel discussions and interactive sessions covered the topics of sexual harassment in academic medicine, building a diverse health care workforce, clinical considerations in spiritual care, intergenerational dynamics in health care, and best practices in unconscious bias training.
Second- year medical student, Kamilah D. Evans, served as a panelist on the intergenerational dynamics session and gave millennial perspectives to audience members. Camille A. Clare, M.D., M.P.H. ’11, left, associate dean of diversity and inclusion for the SOM and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, was a speaker on a panel, “Building Workforce Diversity in Healthcare,” along with Mecca E. Santana, center, senior vice president, diversity, inclusion and community engagement, WMCHealth, and Bonnie Reyna, M.P.H., M.S.Ed., director of community workforce transformation, WMCHealth Center for Regional Healthcare Innovation.
“This conference is an opportunity to start new conversations about diversity and inclusion. I was pleased to see attendees excited about how they can bring what they learned at the conference back to their home institutions and organizations,” said Dr. Clare.
