NYMC Welcomes Kyoko Tirado, M.A., as Director of International Advisement
Tirado Will Oversee Immigration Compliance for International Students and Scholars
Kyoko Tirado, M.A., has joined the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) as director of international advisement. She will be responsible for handling immigration documentation for international students, faculty and researchers through the United States Department of Homeland Security Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). In addition, she will guide them to help understand the academic culture and handle the practical matters of daily life outside of their native countries.
With more than 20 years of experience, she joins the New York Medical College (NYMC) community after serving as director of international advisement and assistant director of operations in the Office of Global Services at New York University. There she was the primary advisor for the medical and dental school's immigration needs. Tirado also has experience working with international students and scholars at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Mount Sinai Medical Center.
“I am confident my experience will translate nicely to NYMC and I’m looking forward to serving as a resource for NYMC's diverse international population,” said Tirado.
Tirado received a B.A. in linguistics from the University of Minnesota and an M.A. in education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is fluent in English and Japanese.
She will work alongside Elizabeth Ward, international student and scholar advisor, who will be transitioning to part-time status prior to her retirement later this year. Ward joined NYMC in 2006 and has helped hundreds of international students successfully navigate through their education.
“Kyoko Tirado, with her dedication to international scholars and extensive experience as director of international advisement at New York University, is a terrific addition who will substantially strengthen the College’s support of international students and scholars going forward,” said Dana G. Mordue, Ph.D., vice chancellor for accreditation, vice chancellor for student support and associate professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology, who oversees the OISS.
