More than 300 attendees participated in this year’s NYMedTalks held on March 31. Since 1986, NYMC medical students have convened an interdisciplinary, interprofessional conference to expose students to topics outside of the traditional academic curriculum. Originally known as Student-Physician Awareness Day (SPAD), the vernal tradition continues today in the form of NYMedTalks to increase exposure to research, innovation, and developments that will impact the approach to healthcare today and in the future. The event was planned and executed by members of the Class of 2020 Student Senate, from left: Kenneth Guber, Abhiniti Mittal, Kendall Presti, Robert Kane, and Jennifer Lindelof. This year, leaders from varying backgrounds and specialties were invited to speak on the theme: “At Crossroads: Healthcare and Technology in Our Future.” Talks covered a diversity of subject matter including human rights, opioid addiction, artificial intelligence, and technologic advances in spinal cord injuries. D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., dean of the School of Medicine, gave the keynote address, “Artificial Intelligence in Medicine - The Rise of the Machines?” Following the talks, a residency and medical specialties fair filled the lobbies of the Medical Education Center and Basic Sciences Building, with residency directors, fellows and residents communicating their passions and educating students about future careers in health care. NYMedTalks was sponsored by the NYMC Board of Advisors and the Office of Student Affairs.
