Office of Medical Education Hosts Preceptor Appreciation Banquet

The Office of Medical Education paid tribute to preceptors who welcome medical students into their private practices, hospitals, clinics and a variety of other settings and to small group leaders at the annual Preceptor Appreciation Banquet held on May 16 in the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center. This year’s event celebrated the dedication of 36 volunteer physicians who were marking milestones of 5-, 10-, 15-, 20- and 25- years of service in the program. Preceptors and small group leaders play an integral role in undergraduate medical education at NYMC, supervising and serving as role models for medical students completing the Foundations of Clinical Medicine course.

The theme of the evening was “Shadowing to Community Immersion: The Role of Community Based Preceptors in Medical Education” and included a presentation and interactive discussion on the NYMC community preceptor experience: past, present and future. Students shared their experiences and expressed their appreciation and admiration for their preceptors in this video. Jeanne Wilson, M.D., left, instructor of pediatrics and course director for Foundations of Clinical Medicine I, and Ofelia Martinez, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of medicine and medical director of Clinical Skills and Simulation Center, thanked one of the evening’s Honorees, Robert S. Grimshaw Jr., M.D., clinical associate professor of medicine, who was honored for his 25 years of service. “Dr. Grimshaw is both a great teacher and mentor. He took time out of his busy practice to ensure that I was properly performing all portions of the physical along with providing personal anecdotes and clinical knowledge to enhance my learning experiences,” wrote one medical student in his evaluation of Dr. Grimshaw.
