SHSP Dean's Distinguished Leaders Lecture Series Features NYMC Flu Vaccine Expert
The School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) hosted a special lecture via a Zoom presentation on October 28 as part of its Dean's Distinguished Leaders Lecture Series.
Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs, welcomed guest speaker, Doris J. Bucher, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology, who presented "Influenza in the Time of COVID-19." Dr. Bucher, who has dedicated most of her research career to work on influenza viruses and influenza vaccine development, explained the similarities and differences between the influenza virus and the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. She also shared the history of her laboratory which is one of three laboratories worldwide that produce high-growth reassortant 'seed' viruses for the influenza vaccine, ultimately used to produce 400 to 500 million doses of flu vaccine annually.
