Dr. Gray Founds the Successful Website Medical School Headquarters - The Ultimate Premed Resource
Ryan Gray, M.D. ’09, Replicates the Spirit of Collaboration as His Site Offers a Host of Support Tools for Pre-Med and Medical Students
Seeing an opportunity to support others on the long and challenging journey through medical training, New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine alumni Ryan Gray, M.D. ’09, founded Medical School Headquarters - The Ultimate Premed Resource. The site offers a host of support tools for pre-med and medical students, including the site’s flagship feature, The Premed Years weekly podcast. The Premed Years is a collection of far-ranging and in-depth interviews that explore the personal journeys of individuals intent on a career in medicine, or those already practicing—including undergraduate pre-med, medical students, residents and practicing physicians.
After graduating from NYMC and completing his residency in Tufts Medical Center’s Transitional Year Program in Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Gray served as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force. It was on an Air Force base where the idea for medicalschoolhq.net was born after a young airman approached Gray seeking advice on pursuing medical school. After a host of similar requests for advice, Gray launched the fledging site with the goal of providing collaborative support for those at any point on the path to becoming a physician.
“I have tried to replicate the spirit of collaboration that I experienced as a student at NYMC among the medicalschoolhq.net community,” said Gray. “The site’s mission is to create a forum that promotes collaboration, not competition, and shares fact-based information about applying and succeeding in medical school.”
Gray’s wife, Allison Gray, M.D. ’09, is also an alum and currently a practicing neurologist. She is a frequent contributor to The Premed Years podcast. “Our listeners are always requesting that she appear on the podcast more often,” Gray says. The couple met while at NYMC and married soon after.
Though running medicalschoolhq.net is now a nearly full-time venture for Gray, he is also a clinical instructor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where he teaches the Foundations of Doctoring course, helping students improve their patient communication skills. He is the author of a book, The Premed Playbook: Guide to the Medical School Interview.
