While the weather was blustery on March 21, the atmosphere outside the Medical Education Center, at noon on Match Day was joyous as the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2025 celebrated where they would continue their medical training as family and friends looked on proudly. Each year, the results of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) are disclosed simultaneously at medical schools around the country. This year’s match included the largest number of applicants in NRMP’s history, with a record number 52,498 applicants total, competing for 45,237 positions.

“I’m thrilled for the opportunity to start the next chapter of my medical training at UCLA,” said Michelle Li, SOM Class of 2025, who matched in internal medicine. “Being a student at NYMC has been an indescribable experience. I’m so thankful to be a part of an amazing community that has supported me every step of the way throughout medical school. I’ve met incredible people here who have really shaped the type of physician and person I aim to be, and I hope to inspire others in the same way throughout residency and beyond.”

“I am excited to have matched into my top choice, radiology at Duke, a dream that began during my years as an MRI technologist,” said Michael Cisneros, SOM Class of 2025. “I am incredibly grateful to NYMC for providing me with the education, mentorship, and support that made this possible. To my mentors, classmates, and everyone who has been part of this journey, thank you for your guidance, encouragement, and camaraderie. NYMC will always hold a special place in my heart, and I deeply appreciate the experiences and opportunities it has given me.”

The Class of 2025 will go on to train in 24 states and the District of Columbia at 103 different institutions, including at NYMC major clinical affiliates Westchester Medical Center and NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, as well as local clinical affiliates NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, Phelps Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, St. Mary’s and Saint Clare’s Hospital, Northern Westchester Hospital, and Greenwich Hospital. They will also train at other major top tier, research-intensive, academic medical centers across the country, including Beth Israel-Deaconess and Massachusetts General of the Harvard Medical School, Brown, Mount Sinai, Johns Hopkins, Boston University, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Duke, Columbia, Georgetown, Weil Cornell, New York University, Cedars Sinai, UCLA, Tufts, and Yale.

The top career choices for the Class of 2025 were internal medicine, anesthesiology, pediatrics, emergency medicine, psychiatry, and surgery.

Members of the SOM administration also offered their words of wisdom. “On my Match Day, I didn't match where I thought I wanted to go. Yet when I reflect on my career, I've had a career that’s been rewarding and satisfying in ways that I could never have imagined and one of the reasons is where I did my internship and residency. I’m extraordinarily grateful for the program into which I matched because of the great training I received, the colleagues I had, and the friends I made,” said Neil W. Schluger, M.D., SOM dean. “You are matching into fantastic training programs. We could not be more proud of you. Every one of you will have the opportunity to have a spectacular career in medicine. Congratulations!”

“Although graduation marks the culmination of your medical school time, many of you will look to this moment as the time you transitioned from being a medical student to a resident physician. You have all worked very hard to get here and should be very proud of yourselves. Even though in a few short months you will be off to soon to be known places, you will always have a home here at NYMC. I am truly honored to have been a part of your medical journeys, and it has been my privilege to get to know you and work with you all, said Susan Rachlin, M.D., senior associate dean for student affairs.
