The Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness hosted a Zoom session, “Push Through: Affirming Your Humanity When Facing Discrimination,” presented by  Karinn A. Glover, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a consulting psychiatrist in the primary care division of Montefiore Health System. Students and faculty joined the October 14 interactive discussion on the impact of racism on physical and mental health and the factors that can negatively impact the performance and well-being of students who are black, indigenous or people of color (BIPOC).

Dr. Glover opened the discussion with a mindful awareness exercise, shared her personal story and offered advice on how to successfully navigate academic and workplace challenges and stressors in daily life.

“Given the current racial injustices, division and events of today, we feel it is important to provide positive role models and spaces for students to gather to process their thoughts and experiences,” explained Reon Baird-Feldman, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and co-director of Student Mental Health and Wellness Services. “We were happy to be able to offer this experience and hope students were able to gain techniques and perspective that might increase their overall mental health.”
