Two Distinguished Speakers to Share Wisdom with Class of 2022
NYMC Set for 163rd Commencement Ceremonies.
The NYMC community is gearing up for the 163rd Commencement under the tent on the Valhalla campus, the first in-person commencement ceremony in two years. Sherlita Amler, M.D, M.S, R.N., Ed.S., C.E.M., Commissioner of Health in Westchester County will address the GSBMS and SHSP class of 2022 on Tuesday, May 24, at 1:00 p.m., and Albert Bourla, D.V.M., Ph.D., chair and chief executive officer of Pfizer will address the SOM on Thursday, May 26, at 1:00 p.m. Both distinguished experts played key roles during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sherlita Amler, M.D, M.S, R.N., Ed.S., C.E.M., Commissioner of Health in Westchester County, adjunct professor of public health, clinical associate professor of pediatrics, and senior fellow in the Center for Disaster Medicine will address the GSBMS and SHSP Class of 2022. She will speak from her more than four decades of experience as a public health professional including the last two amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, leading Westchester County’s response. In addition to her position as county health commissioner, Dr. Amler has served as a state district nursing services specialist, disease investigator and microbiologist, as well as a physician for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where she oversaw various public health and disaster medicine initiatives.
The SOM will welcome Albert Bourla, D.V.M., Ph.D., chair and chief executive officer of Pfizer, for the commencement address. Dr. Bourla, an award-winning scientist and executive, has received various accolades for his work leading Pfizer, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the company developed and received federal approval for a vaccine for the virus in just eight months. In 2021, Dr. Bourla was named CEO of the Year by CNN business and named to Crain’s New York Business Hall of Fame.
