Issue Date: February 27, 2025
Supersedes: Policy: Clinical Laboratory Sciences Progression in the Program dated May 2, 2023
Last Review: February 27, 2025

I. PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for the expected progression in the program for students in the Clinical Laboratory sciences program in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (“GSBMS”).

II. POLICY

Students must satisfactorily complete all course work and clinical practicum in order to sit for the New York State Exam for Clinical Laboratory Sciences licensure examination.

III. SCOPE

This policy applies to students who are enrolled in the NYMC GSBMS M.S. Clinical Laboratory Sciences program.

IV. DEFINITIONS

M.S.: Master of Science Degree
CLS: Clinical Laboratory Sciences
GSBMS: Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
NYMC: New York Medical College
SAP: Satisfactory Academic Progress

V. PROCEDURES

Progression in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program is according to a specific academic timeline.

A. To be eligible for graduation, students must complete all program courses (41.5 credits) with a minimum GPA of 3.0, including either an M.S. Literature Review or a Capstone Clinical Research Project.

B. A passing grade in the Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Sciences course, both overall and in specific components, is required before progressing to the Clinical Practicum.

C. If a student's overall GPA falls below 3.0 during or at the completion of coursework, they must repeat required courses as necessary to raise their GPA to the acceptable level. Procedures regarding repeated courses and GPA calculations can be found in the GSBMS Academic regulations. In essence, the original course and grade will remain on the student's transcript but will be annotated to indicate that this grade is no longer included in the GPA. The new grade will be included in calculations to determine a student’s Satisfactory Academic Progress ("SAP") and eligibility for federal financial assistance, as described by the SAP policy. A student may repeat a specific course only once.

D. A failing grade in a didactic course (offered once per year) must be repeated in the following year.

E. Failure of a Clinical Practicum rotation requires repeating the rotation within the same semester, if possible.

F. Failure of the entire Clinical Practicum course requires repeating the course in the following semester.

G. If a course is repeated and failed, the student will be dismissed from the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program.

VI. EFFECTIVE DATE

This policy is effective immediately.
