Annual Dean’s Faculty Awards

Rising Star Awards

This award recognizes a junior basic science and a junior clinical science faculty member who excels in at least one of the academic activity areas of teaching, research or institutional service. Faculty nominees must:

  • Demonstrate commitment to NYMC SOM’s mission, vision, and values
  • Participate through significant effort in the education of medical students as shown by the creation/support of curriculum, outstanding evaluations for teaching performance/clinical supervision, and/or assessment
  • Establish a recognized research program evidenced by extramural funding, invited presentations, abstracts and publications; essential criteria for basic science faculty
  • Make significant improvements to clinical care and/or to a clinical program related to the clinical teaching programs as shown by increased/new patient visits, recognition through peer-review and/or the community, impact on population health/patient outcomes/social determinants of health, support of resident education and development
  • Contribute in a major way to committees and/or administrative functions affecting the mission, goals and welfare of the College
  • Seek opportunity to improve or gain new skills


Research Excellence Award

This award recognizes a basic science and a clinical science faculty member who are emerging or established in their field as leaders.

  • Demonstrate commitment to NYMC SOM’s mission, vision, and values
  • Surpass performance requirements of their position with distinction and merit 
  • Evidence of significant high-quality scholarship and discovery impacting the field/society, and as acknowledged by their peers
  • Contribute directly or indirectly to the advancement of research as evidenced by abstracts, presentations, publications or fellowships etc.
  • Provide outstanding service to the NYMC SOM community; contribute in a major way to committees and/or administrative functions affecting the mission, goals and welfare of the College
  • Promote or improve the image and research reputation of the College


Teaching and Mentoring Excellence Award 

This award recognizes a basic science and clinical science faculty member who excels in their work by consistently performing beyond expectations in teaching/mentoring areas of students/residents/post-doctoral fellows/faculty/colleagues. Faculty nominees must:

  • Demonstrate commitment to NYMC SOM’s mission, vision, and values
  • Surpass performance requirements of their position with distinction and merit
  • Advanced their own career development through advising, counseling, and serving as a professional role model
  • Shows exceptional commitment to, and involvement in mentoring and advising that promotes professional development of the mentee/advisee
  • Promote research as evidenced by training mentees/advisees in the laboratory and/or clinical specialty areas
  • Contribute directly or indirectly to the advancement of the mentee/advisee as evidenced by abstracts, presentations, publications or fellowships etc.
  • Provide outstanding service to the NYMC SOM community
  • Promote or improve the image and standing of NYMC SOM 


Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award

This award recognizes an outstanding faculty member who exemplifies the value of diversity in their scholarship and service and maintains a record of high accomplishment and leadership. Faculty nominees must:

  • Create, maintain, and demonstrate to the campus and larger community the ability to infuse a common thread of diversity in their scholarship and service
  • Be well known as an exemplar of the institution’s core values at a superior level, continually fostering pride, professionalism, and standing of the College and School of Medicine in areas of equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Exemplify a high standard of scholarship and service that impact diversity that is considered outstanding and worthy of recognition due to level of campus, local community, and/or global impact
  • Demonstrated excellence in diversity, equity and inclusion related to research, professional service, civic engagement, and overall impact on campus climate


Outstanding Achievement Award 

This award is presented to a faculty member whose efforts have sustained significant achievement in combined areas of teaching, research and institutional service. Faculty nominees must:

  • Demonstrate leadership, accomplishment and recognition in academic areas of endeavor
  • Demonstrate outstanding reliability and cooperation; collaborative/team-based/translational etc. achievements are essential criteria
  • Exemplify outstanding conduct and exceed expectations in the performance of duties over multiple years of service to the College
  • Be well known as an exemplar of the institution’s core values at a superior level, continually fostering pride, professionalism, and standing of the College and School of Medicine
