About the School of Health Sciences and Practice

The School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) prepares you to be a leader in public health and clinical therapy.

SHSP centers on four disciplines: public health, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and bioethics. The school offers opportunities to upward-mobile professionals looking to advance their careers in health.

Our faculty are actively involved with local health departments, health systems and other agencies. As therapists and public health leaders, they bring their professional knowledge into the classroom to share real world experiences with students. Our campus is located in an area with a rich history and a highly developed network of social services, advocacy for children and the elderly, disability services and vocational rehabilitation.

Why Choose the School of Health Sciences and Practice?

SHSP offers benefits over similar health programs. Here are a few:

You’ll have real, hands-on clinical experiences early on.

A central feature of our programs is real face-to-face interaction with the patients and community members you will treat. As part of our Speech-Language Pathology program, you’ll get involved at outpatient clinics, medical rotations and other clinical scenarios right away. In our Physical Therapy program, you’ll start out with mock clinical scenarios that allow you to refine your patient communication and therapy skills before clinical rotations begin.

Our licensure exam pass rate and employment rate are nearly perfect.

Our licensure pass rates for our Speech-Language Pathology and Physical Therapy programs consistently reach 99-100%. Almost all of our physical therapy students find a position in the field right after graduation and our SLP and public health graduates become top leaders in their field.

You’ll learn from faculty, physicians and health professionals across disciplines.

One of the most unique elements of studying at SHSP is having the chance to interact with a wide range of physicians, leaders and professionals from different disciplines. This is one of the main benefits of being on a medical school campus with so many different departments and research centers. As a student here you’re exposed to a range of perspectives and innovations in health, both in SHSP and New York Medical College as a whole. This emphasis on interprofessional education allows you to become a well-rounded health professional who understands the health field beyond your specialty.

You’ll have plenty of opportunity to give back to your community.

The foundation of SHSP is built on community, collaboration and giving back. We understand that real disparity exists when it comes to health care and we train you to use your skills and knowledge to help uplift our communities. Whether that means shaping public policy on the local or national level or providing patient-centered therapy to those in need, our school is committed to inclusion and addressing the healthcare divide.

Mission

We prepare tomorrow’s health leaders to preserve, protect and improve individual, family and community health. Though education, investigation, practice and service, our faculty and students bring innovation to clinical practice and public advocacy.

History

SHSP—which opened its doors in 1981 as the Graduate School of Health Sciences—embraces the founding principles of New York Medical College and shares pride in its past.

NYMC has a long history of academic excellence and public service. While much has changed at the College since the early days, NYMC’s tradition of progress and service remains continuous. At SHSP, we embrace these ideals and have enjoyed remarkable growth and development since our founding.

The School of Health Sciences and Practice Strategic Plan

The School of Health Sciences and Practice has a vision for the future of health care education. In developing the strategic plan SHSP leadership and faculty reviewed recent performance indicators and engaged the broad SHSP community in imagining the next five years with a comprehensive and strategic road man for progress marked by innovation and growth.

A clear need emerged to address the dynamic higher education landscape, especially influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the evolving fields of public health, speech-language pathology, physical therapy, and bioethics all required fresh pedagogical concepts and operational solutions. This new strategic plan is intended to guide SHSP in meeting its goals while also contributing to NYMC's capabilities in meeting challenges and opportunities effectively laid out in its overall strategic plan.
