Advanced Certificate in Global Health

This fully online certificate gives you a comprehensive look at global issues in health care.

The 12-credit Global Health Certificate Program examines the pressing health concerns of populations around the world. This program takes an interdisciplinary approach and allows you to explore risk factors and health disparities in different communities. You’ll also learn how international agencies push for higher health standards and increased access to health care.

With this certificate, you’ll gain in-depth knowledge of the socioeconomic, political, and public health factors affecting population groups and individuals. You’ll be well-prepared in your career to take on new roles or responsibilities with a global health focus. Our faculty includes internationally-recognized practitioners and scholars with significant experience in international health and ties to the United Nations. In June 2021, The School of Health Sciences and Practice was designated by United Nations Academic Impact as a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Hub for Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being.

What Can I Do with a Certificate in Global Health?

This certificate provides an introduction to global health challenges with a focus on climate change, communicable diseases and women's health (to name a few topics covered) and their impact on the health and well-being of communities.

If you already work in public health or for an NGO, or you’re interested in becoming a public health practitioner or director, this certificate is a good place to start. This certificate adds a global health perspective to the Generalist MPH and gives you knowledge and skills to work in global settings.

Global Health Certificate Curriculum

Required Courses (12 Credits):

INHM 6001: Primary Care Around the World

  

This course provides an introduction to primary health care in different areas of the world. Topics include systems of health care, review of international organizations, major public health problems, primary care providers, maternal and child health services, surveying for disease prevalence, vital data and information systems, sanitation and drinking water programs, and traditional and western therapies. An overview of the role of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (especially SDG3, SDG 6, and SDG 13 in strengthening primary health care systems are discussed.

INHM 6005: Infectious Diseases and Public Health

  

Epidemiologic principles are used to study the prevalence of infectious diseases. Topics include a review of epidemiologic principles, methods of epidemiologic investigations, surveillance, the role of the laboratory, and strategies of control and prevention of disease. An in-depth study is done of infectious diseases such as water-borne diarrheal diseases, vaccine-preventable diseases, respiratory infections including TB, sexually transmitted diseases, hepatitis, and parasitic diseases. A study of remerging infections, the link between climate change and infectious diseases a discussion of global pandemics such as the Spanish Flu, SARS, Ebola, and COVID-19 and their impact on Global Public Health are included in the course

INHM 6007: Comparative Healthcare Delivery Systems

  

This course offers a comparative analysis of healthcare systems in terms of the financing, organization, and delivery of acute, long-term, and mental health care, and public health services. A comparative analysis of methods of reimbursing physicians, hospitals, and other providers is also offered. Comparisons are drawn between and among nations, including the United States, with respect to political and cultural contexts, public policy, and the regulatory components of these systems. Emphasis is placed on Canada and Western Europe, but Japan, Central and Western Europe, Israel, and Low- and Mid-Income countries are also discussed.

INHM 6008: Women and Health: A Global Perspective

  

The social and health problems of women in developing countries are covered with a particular focus on human rights and its link to women’s health. Topics include reproductive, infectious, chronic diseases, neoplastic diseases, and other women’s health challenges specific to developing areas of the world, stressing the social, political, and economic aspects of health (social determinants) and their outcome on health status with emphasis on the health of women and girls will be highlighted as well. A discussion of MDGs and SDGs and their role in improving women’s health and their human rights are included in the various course modules.
