How to Apply

MS in Speech-Language Pathology applications are submitted through CSDCAS, the communication sciences and disorders (CSD) centralized application service.

Application Deadlines

Your application must be submitted by May 1. Classes start in the fall (mid-August). Applications are accepted from July 17 to May 1. 

What You’ll Need for Your Application

Submit the following documents on CSDCAS along with your application. GRE scores are not required.

  • Official Transcripts
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation: Two of your recommendations should be from college-level instructors with one being a faculty member from an SLP course. Recommendations from in-person courses are preferred. Online professor recommendations will be considered with permission.
  • Personal Essay (See documents section of CSDCAS)
  • Resume

Prerequisite Courses

You can apply before all pre-requisite courses are completed, but they must all be satisfactorily completed prior to the program start date. All courses must be taken within approximately 10 years of the application deadline (exceptions may be made for individuals who work in the health field).

ASHA Required Pre-Requisite Courses

  • Biological Sciences - Courses include biological sciences content areas related to human or animal sciences (e.g., biology, human anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, human genetics, and veterinary science).
  • Physical Sciences - Physics or chemistry 
  • Social/Behavioral Sciences - Courses include psychology, sociology, anthropology, or public health. 
  • Statistics - Courses include basic Statistics courses, Research Methods are not acceptable. 

NYMC Required Pre-Requisite Courses

  • Phonetics - The course should include a phonetic transcription component.
  • Child Development/Language Acquisition - Acceptable courses include child development and child language development.
  • Anatomy and Physiology of Speech - Acceptable courses include anatomy and physiology of speech or speech/hearing.
  • Intro to Communication Disorders - Any course that provides an overview of the discipline of communication sciences and disorders.

Recommended Course

  • Speech Science (recommended, but not required) - Any course that includes the study of the acoustic, aerodynamic, and physiological aspects of speech production.

Non Course-Related Requirements

Our program also has non-course related requirements:

  • CPR: Before beginning the program, students must submit evidence of current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The CPR course must include skill practice on CPR and choking for the adult (1- and 2-person CPR), child, and infant.
  • Background Check: Required after acceptance and before beginning the program.
  • Computer Literacy: Students are expected to be computer literate before entering the program. Several of the courses assume that the student is proficient in the following areas: general computer skills, spreadsheets, email, and Internet. Remedial instruction in computer literacy is available.

What Makes a Successful Candidate?

The SLP program at NYMC is looking for applicants with diverse undergraduate experiences. Successful applicants come to us with backgrounds in the sciences, arts, business, and education in addition to those in communication sciences and disorders. We’re looking for students:

  • who can consider problems from multiple perspectives to generate a variety of creative solutions;
  • who are interested in exploring conditions across the lifespan;
  • with broad academic backgrounds and the ability to critically assess information from a variety of sources;
  • who can demonstrate excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • demonstrate the Essential Functions and Practice Skills such as communication, motor, intellectual/cognitive, sensory/observational, and behavioral/social that you will need in order to learn, and in the practice of, speech-language pathology.

Early Acceptance Agreements

Application Review and Notification

Applications are reviewed from November 1 through May. Applicants are invited to campus for an orientation to the program and for a formal interview. Acceptances are issued on a rolling basis from November through June. Accepted students must submit a $500 deposit to guarantee their place in the class. A Department Admissions committee is charged with the careful review of all completed applications.
