About the School of Medicine

The School of Medicine at NYMC prepares aspiring physicians for a career serving their community.

Committed. Competent. Caring. Diverse. These powerful words describe the School of Medicine (SOM) student body. These are the qualities we seek in our students, and also the qualities our students are looking for in the medical school they choose.

Our students decide to attend New York Medical College for many reasons, but two aspects of our culture stand out: the excellent education and clinical experience opportunities we provide, and our emphasis on delivering compassionate care.

Our students and faculty come from across the U.S. and the world, representing a broad range of racial, ethnic, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds. Students underrepresented in medicine comprise approximately 20% of the SOM student body. The SOM was also one of the first medical schools in the United States to admit women and people of color.

Read on to learn more about our student body and discover why the School of Medicine is the top choice for many aspiring physicians.

Why Choose NYMC School of Medicine?

There are many reasons to choose to study medicine at NYMC. Here are a few:

You’ll train in rotations at some of the most respected institutions in the region.

Through our clinical opportunities, you’ll serve the community while also learning about a range of illnesses and medical situations you wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to at a smaller, less connected campus. Our connections with some of the top medical institutions in the country and our proximity to New York City allow for abundant learning opportunities throughout the region. A focus on diversity is also a central part of our culture, and you’ll learn with and alongside diverse populations throughout your clinical rotations. With our approximately 30 clinical affiliated institutions, you’ll find a place to develop your expertise.

You’ll appreciate our patient-centered culture.

Our programs focus on a patient-centered approach to delivering medical care, and there’s a consistent emphasis on compassion, empathy and communication. The School of Medicine trains physicians who look at patients as people, not as carriers of illness and injury. You will learn to treat the whole person where you acknowledge and attend to their needs, both physical and emotional. Furthermore, with a culture that is more collaborative than competitive you’ll form deeper connections with your fellow medical students as well as students from other areas of the medical college.

You’ll be prepared to get the residency match you want.

We get you into clinical experience sooner with hands on clinical experience in the second half of your second year of medical school. Thanks to our commitment to early, hands-on experience with patients, our exceptional faculty and curriculum, and our emphasis on compassionate medical care, you will be well prepared for immediate career success. Our students match at many of the strongest residency programs in the country, and our residency match rate for graduates is consistently higher than the national average.

You’ll get all the benefits that come with a resource-rich institution.

With more than 160 years of success behind us, the School of Medicine is poised for future growth and innovation. In 2011, NYMC joined the Touro University System, encompassing approximately 18,000 students studying at 29 locations in the U.S. and internationally. This transition ushered in a new era of growth, diversity and opportunity for the College — and for you.
