Raymond J. Dattwyler, M.D.
After completing his second fellowship, Raymond Dattwyler, M.S., M.D., began his academic career at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, moving to Stony Brook University SOM in 1981. At Stony Brook, his interests in infectious diseases and immunology led him to Lyme disease, a rapidly emerging disease on Long Island during the 1980s. To address this growing problem of tick-borne infections, he established the Lyme Disease and Tick-Borne Disease Center at Stony Brook University and served as its director for more than 20 years.
While at Stony Brook, Dr. Dattwyler was promoted to professor of medicine and chief of clinical immunology/allergy. In 2005, he was invited to join New York Medical College's faculty. In collaboration with new colleagues at New York Medical College, Dr. Dattwyler continued his research on the laboratory diagnosis, treatment and prevention of vector borne infectious disease including post 9/11 biothreat agents. He has a strong background in diagnostic laboratory immunology and in mucosal immunology. This has led him to research involving the development of vaccines and immunodiagnostics for Lyme disease and other vector borne infectious diseases.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Dattwyler has received multiple NIH research grants, RO1s, SBIR Phase 1 and SBIR Phase 2 awards. He has published more than 100 papers and holds multiple patents addressing Lyme disease diagnostics and vaccines. He has served on multiple committees and study sections for the FDA, CDC, DOD and NIH.
