Chirag D. Gandhi, M.D., FACS, FAANS, is a prominent neurosurgical leader and an expert in both open and minimally invasive neurovascular surgery. Dr. Gandhi is the chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at New York Medical College and the director of the Brain and Spine Institute for the Westchester Health Network based in Valhalla, New York. He is one of the few neurosurgeons in the country performing both traditional and minimally invasive surgery for vascular diseases of the brain and spinal cord. 

Dr. Gandhi completed his neurosurgery residency under Dr. Kalmon Post at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, during which he also did an in-folded fellowship in diagnostic neuroradiology. He stayed at Mount Sinai completing a fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery with Dr. Aman Patel. At the completion of his training Dr. Gandhi joined the Department of Neurosurgery at Rutgers University-NJ Medical School in Newark, New Jersey, under the leadership of Dr. Peter Carmel, where he focused on developing an academic practice in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery. Over the next decade, he served in many clinical, educational, and administrative roles eventually rising to the level of program director of both the neurosurgery residency and endovascular neurosurgery fellowship, chief of neurovascular surgery, and interim chair of the department.

As a clinical leader, Dr. Gandhi has most recently overseen the rapid expansion of the Westchester Health System’s neurosurgical program through the Hudson Valley. He has a regional and national reputation as a gifted surgeon, educator, and innovator. Dr. Gandhi is a passionate teacher and mentor with many years also leading the training programs for the next generation in both Neurosurgery and Neurointerventional Surgery. For nearly two decades, his educational leadership has helped shape the future of students ranging from high school through fellowship, and many of his graduates are in successful practice throughout the U.S.

Through his career, Dr. Gandhi has been the recipient of a variety of professional accolades. Among these are the AOA Medical Honors Society, Outstanding Clinician Award by the Rutgers University Board of Trustees, Mount Sinai Neurosurgery’s prestigious Sidney Hollin Invited Lectureship, and nominations to Top Doctors 2018-2021. In 2019, Dr. Gandhi was inducted into the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the world’s oldest neurosurgical group comprised of clinical and educational leaders within the field.

Research

Dr. Gandhi has been a prolific researcher, authoring more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in the medical literature in both clinical and basic neuroscience, focused on cerebrovascular disease. He has also been an invited speaker both nationally and internationally and a successful author of three well-recognized textbooks. His combined contributions in academic neurosurgery have earned him recognition and membership into the leading professional societies within his field, including the American Association of Neurological Surgery, Congress of Neurological Surgery, and Society of Neurointerventional Surgery. He has played important roles in key educational initiatives within these societies.
