What are the responsibilities of the Office of Government Affairs?

The Office of Government Affairs advances the interests and priorities of NYMC by managing relationships with federal, state and local government officials and agencies, as well as businesses and nonprofit organizations. Under direction of NYMC senior leadership, we advocate for legislation and policies that impact the College. We often seek funding for important research, educational programs, capital projects, and economic development, and collaborate with public health departments and commissioners within the region.

How would you describe the day-to-day functions of the Office of Government Affairs?

Government affairs is a prime example of "change is the only constant" because government priorities and projects can shift rapidly and sometimes unexpectedly. We monitor the landscape and stand ready to act quickly, spot new opportunities with respect to priorities determined by senior leadership, and address challenges as they arise.

What do you find most interesting or most rewarding about working in the Office of Government Affairs?

We thrive on the strong relationships we develop with many external actors in and out of government, some of whom become valuable partners that help us focus our efforts on behalf of NYMC. In collaboration with the Office of Public Relations, we help expand public awareness of the vast knowledge and resources of the College. Over time, our partners can appreciate the dependability of NYMC in bringing value to our region and nation.

Is there a fun fact or best kept secret about the Office of Government Affairs?

We claim only a small credit for NYMC’s millions in government funding. The real champions are our world-class faculty members whose extraordinary knowledge, creativity, and energy generate exciting projects leading to consequential results that inspire ongoing support from public officials and others.
