New York Medical College Students to Lead Largest Student Organization for Medical Students of Color

Valhalla, New York – Reba Gillis and Kamila Evans, both fourth-year medical students at New York Medical College’s (NYMC) School of Medicine, were appointed to leadership positions with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), the largest, student-run organization focused on the needs of medical students of color. Ms. Gillis and Ms. Evans were named National Vice President and National External Affairs Committee Co-Chairperson, respectively.


New York Medical College Celebrates Class of 2020 Virtually

Valhalla, N.Y., May 19, 2020 – New York Medical College’s (NYMC) 161st and the Touro College of Dental Medicine’s (TouroCDM) inaugural Commencement exercises were celebrated with online pomp and circumstance at 7:00 p.m. on May 19. An audience of more than 1,600 viewers joined in to view the conferral of 528 degrees to the Class of 2020, including 211 doctor of medicine (M.D.) degrees, 43 doctor of physical therapy (D.P.T.) degrees, 8 doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, 69 master of science (M.S.) degrees, 91 master of public health (M.P.H.) degrees and 3 doctor of public health (Dr.P.H.) degrees from NYMC and 103 doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S.) from TouroCDM, the first new dental school in New York State in 50 years.

Faculty from New York Medical College and Zucker School of Medicine Create Free E-Book to Educate Children about the Science of COVID-19

Valhalla, New York – Engaging, informative and free – Kelly Stays Home: The Science of Coronavirus is a community outreach tool that teaches children the principles of viral transmission, social distancing and herd immunity and explain why they need to wash their hands, stay home from school and receive shots from their doctor to prevent illness.

In the name of public health outreach, Adam E. Block, Ph.D., assistant professor of public health at New York Medical College partnered with his wife, Lauren Block, M.D., M.P.H., a primary care physician at Northwell Health and an associate professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell to create Kelly Stays Home: The Science of Coronavirus. The free e-book seeks to educate children ages 5-12 about the science behind the current COVID-19 pandemic.


Graduating Students at New York Medical College School of Medicine Celebrate Their Residency Training Placement

VALHALLA, NY – Today at noon, seniors at New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM), along with graduating medical students across the nation, learned where they were matched to medical residency programs and will continue their training for the next several years in their chosen specialty. Although it was not the traditional envelope opening ceremony, students learned where they matched online and a live stream of the event allowed family and friends to join in the celebration.  Conducted annually by the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), the Match uses a computer algorithm to match the preferences of applicants with the preferences of residency programs, in order to fill the available training positions at U.S. teaching hospitals.


Paul T. Diamond, M.D., Appointed to Lead Rehabilitation Medicine Program at New York Medical College

Valhalla, New York – Paul T. Diamond, M.D., has been appointed the Catherine and Vladislav P. Hinterbuchner Professor and Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York Medical College (NYMC) and director of rehabilitation medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. Most recently serving as director of neuro rehabilitation and associate professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with the University of Virginia Health System (UVA Health), Dr. Diamond will bring valuable clinical and research expertise to both institutions.


New York Medical College’s Center For Disaster Medicine Provides Training To Yonkers Fire Department To Prepare For Mass Casualty And Disaster Situations

Valhalla, New York – On February 6, members of the Yonkers Fire Department participated in a day-long training course taught by New York Medical College’s (NYMC) Center for Disaster Medicine. The course was designed for civilian pre-hospital providers to learn the facets of tactical and operational medicine such as providing stabilizing care in hostile environments and stop-the-bleed techniques. The hands-on training was given to first responders from the Yonkers Fire Department, who will now be better prepared to handle disaster situations such as a mass shooting, explosion or natural disaster. 


New York Medical College’s Center for Disaster Medicine Hosts Training Session for Putnam Police Department

Valhalla, New York – On January 14, members of the Putnam County Police Department participated in a training session to learn basic austere medicine techniques. The training was conducted by New York Medical College’s (NYMC) Center for Disaster Medicine, an organization that provides workshops, training and education to better prepare law enforcement, EMS, fire departments, other first responders, educational institutions, business and public health professionals and communities for natural or man-made disasters, including mass casualty incidents and bioterrorism.

New York Medical College’s Center for Disaster Medicine Provides Training to White Plains Hospital to Prepare for Disaster Situations

Valhalla, New York – On January 16, emergency department clinicians and other physicians at White Plains Hospital participated in an eight-hour training course taught by New York Medical College’s (NYMC) Center for Disaster Medicine to build upon their already growing commitment for disaster preparedness. The course was created to refresh the knowledge of medical professionals within the hospital who are responsible for the initial triage of victims of a disaster, such as a mass causality situation. The course focuses on prioritizing patient care based on the hospital’s capacity for surgical intervention, critical care admission or stabilization in the emergency department.
